Thanks for this info jojo4u, this is very useful where for example you have a small system drive and a large storage drive, the storage drive can be spun down most of the time making it effectively silent.

Thanx :) This post is a bit work in progress since I'm just trying things out. I cannot check option one since I'm lacking a second hdd.

Thanks for all the links! I've tried HDDScan, and the notebook Hardware Control to manage AAM settings for my 3.5'' hard drives, but neither of them will do it. NHC gives me an error, and HDDScan doesn't have an option to enable AAM anywhere.

jojo4u wrote:Here two three scenarios for hdd power down. Diskmon and Filemon from sysinternals help very much here.

in order to shut down a secondary hdd
1. use mountvol.exe to unmount drive
2. use hddscan to disable drive
How, then, would you reactivate the drive for use? Just undo those steps?

1. get tweakui and disable general->"optimize harddrive when idle" and taskbar->"warn when low on disk space"
2. disable or move page file
3. get exctrlst.exe and disable perfdisk since Windows accesses some perfomance data every hour.
I've also had to
Disable Recycle bin on drive
Disable System restore on drive
Disable indexing service

jojo4u, many thanks for the links. It is gracious of you to save us from time spent searching. I had not seen the other thread.
