Btw, 8600GTS only compares to around a 7950GT, so gaming-performance-wise it's pretty average.

well it is a middleclass card so you can't expect it to beat 1950XT...

thats a nice card. if it hits like the 150 dollar mark thats a winner. dx10 and running near speed of a x1950 sounds swell.

200 for the total package from gigabyte is a huge freakin win. that could make a nice machine!!!

allendale e4300 plus that would be a sleek system for not that much money. could have it cooled so easily....

What I love about those huge passive heatsinks is throwing a 92mm nexus on them for the same level of overall silence but now cold temps.

[ this used to be a link to what appeared to be the passively cooled gigabyte card at eWiz, but
the picture and description didn't match the model, so it's gone. i don't feel like rewarding
eWiz for their still-present error with a corrected link, and there are a number of passive 8x00
cards out now, best bet might be to look elsewhere. if you do opt to get the gigabyte card,
note that the passively and actively cooled cards have the same model #, except the actively
cooled card has a "-B" on the end! ]

So far Asus's only silent card is the underwhelming 8500gt.

shame about the DDR2 on that 8500GT - I'm hoping for an equivalent to my current 7300GT DDR3, cheap but with a lot of poke and overclockable like crazy. Then if I'm lucky it'll be out in time for my next upgrade later this year

any news on power consumption of any of these cards?

8600GTS:

yeah, the GTS is sort of a waste of money. and now apparently heat.

I have heard that it has a HIGHER clock speed than a 8800GTS !! but its bus is like miniscule compared and uses slow ram, so it goes considerably slower.

the GT is where it is at with normal clocks and such. probably this years sweet spot for a decent gaming machine in spcr standards.

So are there any passive 8600 GT cards announced yet? The extra power consumption of the 8600 GTS over the 8600 GT sounds like a waste.
Also, do we know if these cards are any smarter than the previous generation about saving power when they're idle?

probably not.... the 7900GS smokes all the 86/85 cards, and costs less than a 8600GTS (which it still outperforms).

And its 43Watts are fairly easy to cool passively.

here, the 8600GT costs the same as a 7900GS. Unless you really need PurevideoHD, 7900GS is a better choice.

Here, the X1950XT can be had for less than the 8600GTS, but none are passively cooled out of the box

Maybe if the Accelero S1 gets out shortly and goes cheap.. I'm looking into the 8600GT otherwise.

No, I don't need any PurevideoHD or anything with video/audio encoding etc. Just some gaming, occasionaly Photoshop and rarely 3D rendering stuff and that's it.

The 8xxx series have significant benefits for a HTPC that needs HD Video support. The CPU load is reduced by a factor of 3 with H.264 decoding in comparison with a 7600 GT which was no slouch in this department. You donâ€™t even need dual core for H.264 playback for the first time. The Nvidia Purevideo HD is Vista only for now, but XP support is due soon.
