Sorry if this doesn't appear silence-related, but it is, because I need to buy a networked and silent hard disk enclosure.
So I want to set up a NAS (network-attached storage). And I want to stick that nice Samsung 500GB in there. But I need to enclose the Samsung in a quiet and cool enclosure, like the Antec MX-1. But the Antec by itself isn't NAS, so I could connect the Antec via USB2 to an empty NAS enclosure. But would that be slower than installing the Samsung in an expandable NAS enclosure to get SATA speeds? But then again, I'll be accessing the disk over 802.11g or 802.11n, so where would the speed limitation come in?
See what I mean...
USB2 speed is 480 Mbps (ref)
SATA is 3,000 Mbps (ref)
802.11g is 54 Mbps (ref)
802.11n is 248 Mbps (ref)
Of course wired LAN would be 1,000 Mbps. Unless it's not a Gigabit thingy... then I guess it's 100 Mbps.
So I guess over wireless the speed limitation is the 802.11g/n, and over wired LAN it's in the USB2 or 10/100 ethernet.
Can anyone recommend a quiet and cool NAS enclosure?
Want to buy the Antec MX-1, but it's not a NAS

sgksgk is correct, but only half way. He is correct that wireless network speed will be biggest bottleneck, but he is incorrect that it's not enough to watch a video stream. Even if you stream full DVD, you only need 2.22MB per second bandwidth. Theoretically even 54g wireless network would be able to handle that. The only problem is that in general wireless networks are less reliable and have latency issues, and may disconnect randomly which means if you're streaming videos you'll have to restart it.
