Any way to silence a humming Spinpoint?

Post by scrandman » Wed Jun 13, 2007 11:51 am

I've had the Samsung Spinpoint for just over a year now - about a month after I bought it, I started to get a humming sound from it.

Today I finally got round to "suspending" it using a thick block of foam and some elastic. The seek noise is totally inaudible now which is great, however it has done very little to silence the constant humming from it - which is the most notable noise from my PC.

It's the SATA II 200Gb model with the Nidec bearing - model SP2004C. AAM is enabled.

Does anyone have any suggestions in quieting it down (short of hitting it with a hammer)?

Erm, guess I'll just need to suffer it then?

Scythe Quiet Drive on foam (or suspended if you have the room for it) should help tremendously. I have a Raptor in it, and it's inaudible except for the seeks. Seeks are still a major PITA though, but since your drive is much quieter to begin with, you shouldn't have any problems.

Hello,

Can you suspend it with an elastic cord of some sort?

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm not sure that suspending it will do much to be honest. By using the thick foam block and elastic I've already completely eliminated all seek noise.

The sound issue I have is a constant hum which appears to come directly from the bearing / motor a bit like a noisy fan. It happens regardless of whether the HD is active or idle. The only way I can get it to stop is to put the HD on standby through RMClock. The noise doesn't even appear to be getting transfered to the case now.

I remember reading from others a while back about Samsungs with this humming - I just wondered if there were any proven methods of eliminating it?

Hello,

The hum is probably vibration. And the suspension will likely help it a lot. Do a Search on suspension...

Not so easy to get hold of a gun here in the UK. I guess the claw hammer will have to do...

Hi scrandman, I use foam mounting for HDD suspension and I don't think elastic or any other suspension will help any further. I have a WD 5000AAKS in a Scythe Quiet Drive and the Quiet Drive is really good. Takes most of the idle (constant humm) away and the seek noise is bearly audiable. It's "mounted" on a 1" think piece of foam (on its side) in the air intake path and typical HDD temp is ~35°C.
I got mine from QuietPC.com, currently £29.99. if your happy with your Samsungs capacity/performance then go for the Quiet Drive, otherwise buy a new bigger/faster HDD and see how it is. You can, of course, reuse the Quiet Drive if you upgrade the HDD later, a good investment I think as I don't see the 3.5" form-factor going away anytime soon.
Seb
