Help me pick a new fan 92MM or 120MM

Post by comfortablynumb » Fri Jul 13, 2007 3:28 pm

Hello new to boards, I'm in search of replacing my front intake fan. Right now I have an Evercool 120mm aluminum fan specs are 2000 rpm, 79.14 CFM 36 dBA, it sounds louder then that to me

I've searched through the forums and read some of the reviews, from there I have been looking at the Nexus and the Yate Loon 120mm fan, from what I understand they are essentially the same fan?

My biggest concern, there is only a 12db drop in noise according to the specs, I have pretty sensitive hearing and with the fan I have now I can hear it even outside my computer room. I basically would like to quiet it down enough to where I can put on my headphones and listen to music and not hear the roar of fans.

I know I don't exactly have a quiet computer setup per se, but from listening around the system and unplugging different fans, my intake is the biggest culprit of the noise pollution.

If anyone has any recommendations I'd greatly appreciate them.

My System:
1xSpire 120MM Exhaust fan, 1x120mm Fan in the PSU, 1x120mm Evercool fan intake, 1x80mm Antec side intake fan, stock chipset fan, and stock chipset fan on the video card.
Atop X-Blade case
DFI Ultra D Nforce 4 Mobo
Atlon 64 3000+ (socket 939) with stock amd hsfu
Cooler Master 450 true power PSU
Western Digital SE16 Sata II HD
Aopen Geforce 6200 (stock hsfu)
EMU 0404 sound card

I would get a 120mm Nexus for your intake.

Remove the 80mm intake.

Replace the stock CPU HS/fan with something quieter.

I don't think you need more intake than the Nexus given that you don't have a CPU that's too hot.

Thanks for the suggestions, also I forgot to mention my current temps:

Chipset: is running around 50 C
Processor: 40 C nominal and around 50 C under a load

Edit: looks like I was looking at the wrong Yate Loon, I just was browsing around Jab-Tech some more I found this Yate Loon 20.8 dcb 44.5 CFM.

drop the 120mm intake
drop the 80mm side intake

replace the rear 120mm exuast. Nexus 120 or Scyth S-Flex 1200rpm, and then get a fan controller to undervolt it under 800rpm.

cheep fan controller:

Replace northbridge fan:

you can just epoxy it on with AS:

It would probably be cheeper to just replace the whole VGA card instead of getting an aftermarket passive cooler for the one you have now.

if it will fit on your motherboard, replace the stock HSF on the CPU with a scythe ninja with included S-Flex 1200rpm fan.

If you need somthing smaller, check out the tower heatsinks from thermalright, or even the zalman 7000 al/cu.

I'd also suggest replacing the PSU with somthing quieter, like this seasonic S12 430w.

==========

Total: Around $230 shipped.

Thanks for all those links :)

I was thinking of replacing the Northbridge but the only solution I see that would work is the Thermalright HR-05. The Northbridge fan sits right under the graphics card, really a stupid design and quit a pita...

The Coolermaster PSU is pretty quiet surprisingly, but probably once I replace the fans I will start noticing that other parts of my computer are noisy.

Ultimately I plan getting a decent case something like the Antec P180, but I'm just really tight on budget right now.

No, I don't think you were looking at the wrong one unless you were looking at the ball bearing version. Most of us that buy the 120x120x25 sleeve bearing version are running it at 5v or 7v which makes it much quieter. Besides the 20mm version is a new release that wasn't an option until very recently.

Code: Select all

Fan Voltage Noise RPM
120mm Nexus 12V 22 1080
120mm Nexus 7v 19 680
120mm Nexus 5v <19 490
A Yate loon at 1000 rpm will sound very similar if not the same as a Nexus at 1000 rpm.

So long as you slow the Yate Loon down you won't be complaining about it and for $3 to $5 you can surely afford to buy one of each and have a spare laying around. Use the one that sounds better to you after testing them fairly.

Sample variance is always a factor and fan manufacturers often report CFM and db(A) in ways that will confuse you...

I'm using the GlobalWin for exhaust now.

Its very quiet to me, fair amount of air being exhasuted as well.

I have that, the YateLoon and the Nexus. I don't think you can go wrong with those 3.

Hello,

The GlobalWin NCB is very good (I have several), but it is not 18dBA.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions...

I went ahead and ordered the Globalwin from SVC, bearings was the final deciding factor for me. In the past with different fans I never seemed to have luck with sleeve bearings. I saw that Yate Loon had a bearing version but I couldn't find much out about it.

I'll post my impressions when I get it :)

Just wanted to post an update, I got the Globalwin fan today, and it's about dead silent, I highly recommend the fan.
