Intel Penryn based Xeon quads... TDP
looking at the TDP of the Penryn based Xeon quads...I think I will go E6750 now, skip the cheap G0 stepping Q6600, and then get a cheap Yorkdale Quad after the socket 775 has been retired...this would be the sane thing to do

I'm going the quad, can't wait... I read somewhere though there's already 500k backorders on g0 cpus, don't know if that's all quads though.
The Xeon Penryns look great, especially the TDP. I don't know why people are compaining about the 120W revision; it's very unlikely that cpu draws a full extra 40W, that's just the next TDP bracket Intel uses.

In the AMD world, you are correct that the processors never get close to the TDP (most 95's are generally drawing somewhere in the 50's). AMD uses TDP to determine the maximum overall that the chip could ever consume. In practice the actual draw is significantly lower.
However, Intel does not do it that way. It's a long complicated discussion, but generally speaking, they run ~85% of TDP because they have the ability to throttle back if they get too hot.
The best way to show the difference is at the wall with a power meter.

in any case it's still a lot lower than the Q6600 105w B stepping and the G0 stepping at 95w
that was my point.
I will probbaly get me a cheap E2160 and o/c it to 3ghtz to hold me over till the Penryn Quads get released. Still will be a lot faster than my P4 2.8c Northwood
And I can sell my E2160 for half the price later on and still lose hardly anything
