E6850 3GHz Quad Core 1333FSB Processor... Am I mad?

Hi Guys,

Saw these processors come in at a REAL good price... less than I nearly bought a E6600 for recently. I want to use this in my next HTPC build with a new p35 board (Still undecided what to run).

Would this processor be too hot for a silent system? Am I mad to do this?

I will be cooling with a Thermalright SI-120 cooler pictured below:



My question is - will this processor cause systems temps to go mad? I am guessing 4 cored and 3ghz top spec processor - it has got to be a hot one!!? Am I right? I find it hard to spend £20 less on a processor that is no where near as quick...

why not get a Q6600 and OC it?

either way, I'm using a TR-Ultra-120X on my OCed Q6600 and it is HOT, like 71-65C loaded with quadprime, and about 63-58C loaded with SMP folding.

edit - I'm not done testing this out though, right now I'm using such a low pressure fan for silence I'm quite sure I've exceeded the efficiency barrier of this heatsink with a such a large heat source with very low airflow
I'm going to acquire a thermalright HR-01 Plus asap, I'm certain it'll perform better with a low pressure fan.

I did a quick test with a Sharkoon SE2000, temps were much better, and I tested a 120x38mm YSTech 125cfm beast fan too, VERY big drop, also very loud, I wish I had a decent case instead of this sidepaneless POS

Not sure if your details are quite right - the 3GHz E6850 is a dual-core, and the quad-core QX6850 is very much more expensive.

If you're running a quad core at 3GHz (either a QX6850 or more sensibly an overclocked Q6600, which is about the same price as the E6850), I think the SI-120 will struggle, at least if you want to keep fan noise to SPCR-approved levels. You'll probably be better off with one of the big towers, which needless to say don't play nicely with most HTPC cases.

If in fact it is a dual-core E6850 you're looking at, the temps will be much more manageable and it's a hugely powerful CPU anyway...

An undervolted non overclocked Q6600 G0 stepping isn't too terribly hot. With a Thermalright Ultra120 extreme and Yate Loons running at ~700rpms, I'm idling ([email protected]) in the low 30's. At full load and Yate Loons running at 1000 rpms, the cores hit the mid 40's.

They run much hotter overclocked, at 3.4GHz and a small bump in voltage, I was easily in the 50's at max fan rpm.

I thought it was too good to be true, you are right it is just a dual core chip. Damn quick one, and by the sounds of things relatively cool too. Think I will still go with one of these, thanks guys.

That's excellent to hear. I don't need the raw speed. I need the ability to do several things at once. I don't mind running at 2.4GHz or less, especially if that will help to be cool and run silently.
