What P35 Mobo do you think is best for overall performance, overclocking, temps, layout, and of course, looks

Best P35 Motherboard?

Post by laguz1 » Tue Aug 21, 2007 12:29 pm

just curious on a mid-high end P35 board...

are there other good p35 boards out there too? i was considering a IP35 (non pro) version, but is the double boot time any troublesome?

For the gigabyte boards, are the only differences between the DS3R and DS3P just the additional PCIx16 slots?
Oh, and will an Ultra-120 fit any/all of the above?

Thanks

I've used dozens of Gigabyte boards in my builds, and never had one go wrong. I've used about 6 ASUS boards, and they all seemed to have a trick or quirk; usually easy to find on forums or fixed with a BIOS update, but not worth it when a simpler solution is so easy.

Gigabyte P35 board uses about 10W or so less than the Asus P5K Deluxe.
I use the P5K Deluxe and the amount of heat this motherboard is dumping is incredible.

I happen to like the IP-35 Pro. But, from what I hear, all three are great.

The Asus is the most liked "overclocking" board, the Gigabytes are the best "value", and the Abit is the "jack-of-all-trades" board in my opinion. Good overclocking, cheaper than the Asus, and has good options (including uGuru fan controls, etc.).

The difference between the DS3P and the R is :

dual PCI_express 16x
IEEE 1394 Controller

The Ultra-120 will fit on both

hey dazrin, how tall is the NB cooler on the IP35 pro? would a HR-03 fit if i looped it over the back of the graphics card?

since i know the ultra 120 can clear over it, but i'm not so sure on the HR-03...

So the consensus is that the Asus runs hotter than the Gigabyte, so those wanting to build a quieter machine should eschew the Asus in favor of the Gigabyte, hmm?

Can someone please post some links to references, thanks.

it's pci-e 1x16x and 1x4x - NOT 2x16

The DS3P also has Dual BIOS, which is a backup of the BIOS on a second chip to protect against a bad flash.

Techreport liked the Gigabyte boards except for the legacy ports, and the new 2.0 versions of the boards replace those legacy ports with USB ports. So the DS3 2.0 line looks pretty sweet to me.

I have voted for the gigabyte... I researched for several weeks on what to get. I ended up getting the gigabyte just because everyone said that was the way to go... something about the solid capacitors being great for running cool and reliably

ok, so i'll most likely settle for the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R one, since i won't need two x16 slots

and the revision 2.0 one has USB2.0 instead of all those legacy ports

now...if i put a ultra 120 on that mobo, will i have room for a thermalright tower NB cooler? since that gold stock nb cooler looks not that great

any ultra 120 + DS3R pics would be nice, thanks

I'll post a picture when I get home. I don't think you need to change the NB heatsink. Even when overclocked at 330 mhz, the NB temperature never goes over 45C

what if i go for 400 mhz fsb, so i can get 800 mhz ram at 1:1

since i have an e6400, so i'd like 400 x 8 for 3.2 ghz, 1:1 mem/cpu ratio for 800 mhz ram

the ultra 120 should handle 3.2 ghz, no? i'm just concerned about that NB

You could have a fan on the top hard drive cage to cool the video card and the NB heatsink. it might be enough

Here it is. There'a about half an inch between the Ultra-120 and the top of the NB cooler. With a fan on the upper drive cage there should be plenty of cooling for the Northbridge

thanks for the pics

yeah, i see what you mean...

well, the ultra 120 covers most of the NB, so i guess an aftermarket cooler is not for me...maybe i'll explore this a bit later

but i think i'm set w/ the ultra 120 (non extreme) + the gigabyte DS3R
