need help choosing case fans for Antec P180

Post by rfadream » Sun Sep 30, 2007 5:11 pm

These are the components in my build so far.

CASE: Antec P180B
PSU: Corsair 620HX
CPU: Q6600 G0
CPU HS: Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme
MOBO: Abit IP35 Pro
VIDEO: MSI 8800Ultra OC
HD: WD 750GB SATA
DVD RW: Samsung SH-S203B
MEMORY: 2x2GB G.Skill DDR2 800

My goals for this system
-Overclock the Q6600 to 3.2
-Keep Idle CPU under 40C
-Keep Load CPU under 60C

I have decided to layout my build just like Konnetikut here
I've decided to add 4X Scythe S-Flex fans to the back, top, TR Ultra 120 Extreme, and the middle right of the case.

I am trying to decide on whether to go with the 1200 or 1600 rpm version.
# Would going with the 1200rpm for all 4 fans be adequate cooling?
# How much better temps would i get if i went 4X 1600 rpm instead?
# How much louder would the 1600s be?
# Should I not put a fan on the middle right where the HD Cage is?
# Does anyone have a better combination of fan speeds for my setup?

I don't need the case to be silent but would prefer if it was low enough to sleep through from 5 feet away.
I'd appreciate any help you guys can give me. Thanks!

1200rpm is more than enough. I run my setup with the fans below 600rpm most of the time, and only seldom have to speed them up, only on very hot days.

Idle CPU below 40 should be a nobrainer, Load temps below 60 from a Q6600 @ 3.2GHz will demand higher cpu fan speeds, but total fan speeds for both intake and exhaust doesnt have to be significantly higher.

That 8800Ultra of yours will need abit of airflow, so you should have a fan in the mid bay just behind the filter. Remove the mid bay hdd tray.

You should also consider a Scythe Kama Bay with the fan piggy-backed off the cpu header. This helped in my system (better parity between exhaust and intake air pressure)

when you say higher speed do you mean 1600? could you be a little more specific?

Must be blind, sorry.

The Q6600 is a hard beast to tame, even with a TRU120E
A friend of mine had some problems getting his Q6600 to be stable, but with reapplication of AS5 and no overclocking its doing SMP Folding@home with temps around 50-53C with a Scythe 1600rpm 120mm fan at full blast. Obviously not what I'd call quiet, but it works for him. I'm not sure what other fans he has in his system, and he's not on IRC right now, so I cant ask him either.

I think he has the B3, so your G0 should be running abit cooler.

right now i am leaning towards all 4 scythe fans being 1200 rpm.
if anyone here has this same setup i'd appreciate it if you'd post your temps and your opinion on the noise level.

with no fans in the lower bay except the psu since i will only be using one hd.

 You need to caption properly (ie. directly above or below pic)
You're absolutely welcome to use my pics, of course.

As for fans...
1) TR120UE: S-FLEX SFF21E...reported as ~450 RPM in BIOS.
It's soooo slow. If I stop it, it doesn't start again without a bit of help.
2) YL D12SL-12 exhaust...reported as ~750RPM in BIOS.
Fanmated at 5V.
3) Noctua NF-S12 1200 with U.L.N.A. in lower chamber.
Don't know either RPM or voltage values. No noise, so whatever.

Due to the peculiarities of my recently RMA'd DS3R... I haven't overclocked my Q6600 yet. It's sitting at 34-34-33-31 idle.

ya thats what i'd planned but i was afraid some people would miss the text if i put them under the photo.

great photos btw, your photos are what pushed me over the edge.

i'd been wanting to pull the trigger on the p180 for a while now.

have you seen the windowed versions of the p180?

man that would look so insane with your wiring.

are you saying you don't have a fan on the top exhaust or the top chambers front intake?

Yes, I am. Surprise?
I would put a top exhaust as well, but I don't have the right fan to do so. I only have one spare D12SL-12, but it's not exactly suitable because:
1) closed corners / P182 top fan clip mount problem
2) sleeve bearing / orientation problem
