Lubics Case System

Post by DavidG » Fri Aug 15, 2003 9:26 am

Tom's has an article on Quakecon 2003 that includes a tease about a new erector set build your own case from Aerocool that might allow for experimenting with other case concepts such as radiant cooling.
With the Lubics case system, you are no longer bound by the concept of a box of some sort in which to hold your case. This new case system is more like an erector set that allows you to build sections anyway that you can dream of, to design not only a case, but a concept as well. Imagine a case that looks like an airplane, car, or animal. The Lubic system makes this possible.

The concept involves combining struts in various lengths and sizes that can be easily bolted together to create any design. If you don't like it, simply disassemble it and build something new.
I couldn't find anything on the Aerecool site. I don't know if this will turn out to be anything but a novelty but it is an interesting concept that might take ghetto to a whole new level.

I was just browsing the Aerocool website* and I noticed this crazy lubics thing. It's like an erector set for case building! As much as case design (airflow, etc) gets discussed here, I wonder if this kind of kit would be useful for prototyping experimental case builds?

I found this review with a lot of interesting pictures

The main weakness seems to be the lousy manual and the complete lack of, uh, "walls" -- there's only enough acrylic for the motherboard tray. Seems neat though. There's a vendor-provided lubics forum here:

and a gallery of examples

These kits are available from Kustom PCs in the UK:

Yeah, there are some retarded examples, like that giant pirate ship and the farm with the cows as "reset" and "power".

Still I think the idea has some merit for prototyping case designs in the hands of people who aren't complete goofballs.
