TX650 not avail: Tx750 same $ as VX550, which to buy?

Aiming for TX650 but not avail locally, and don't want to order this item (install tonight).

Tons of TX750 avail, so much so that they are discounted and heavily rebated to cost exactly the same as a VX550 (after rebate).

I CAN get by with a 550, but for the same price, should I just get the 750? I know, 750 might be 1 or 2 db louder at same draw - but normally its 50 - 85% more expensive than the 550.

I'm not planning on it at the moment, but would be nice to have the option to go overclocked SLI and max out a e8500 and DDR3 ram. I'm okay w/ single slot vid for now, just tempted by the opportunity for free upgrade to 750.
What to do?

If you were going for the TX650 anyway, why would you now consider the VX550?

VX550 = acceptable, meets current needs, no plans to upgrade components

TX650 = ideal, gives room to grow - most replacement components consume more power than previous generation

So in the absence of the ideal model, TX650, I would be satisfied with the VX550. I don't plan to upgrade to Crossfire or SLi within the next 3 years, but it wouldn't hurt, nor cost much more to have the option to do so w/out obsoletizing my newish psu.

If there is another 650watt single rail psu w/ a rep & warranty at least as good as corsair, for less than $100, and avail locally, I'd consider it also. Just not aware of any other option within these conditions.

Back to the question: Take the sufficiently powered VX550, or overkill psu TX750 for the same price?

What other quality name brand has 650 single rail?

You originally wanted the TX650. Now you realize it's out of stock and instead you can either get the VX550 or TX750 and they're the same price. Why wouldn't you get the upgraded version of the PSU you were going for anyway? I don't see any catch here. Isn't it obvious to go for the TX750? It's a higher power, quieter PSU for the same price of the VX550. What is there to lose?

In case you were wondering, the TX750 (just like the TX650) does feature a single 12V rail. So that doesn't change.

I guess I was really trying to ascertain what drawbacks having a needlessly overpowered psu would bring. If you have a modest system and receive a coupon for a free psu of your choice, would you automatically choose the most recognized brand of 1,000 or 1300watt of unit - as long as its quiet and it fits?
The link referenced above does not include a TX750 to compare to the VX650.

there aren't really any, apart from the extra noise (the fan in a 1000W unit will be a higher-speed model to deal with the huge amount of heat at full load; that's rarely good for silence).

IMO, you may as well get the TX750, and then if you find it's too noisy, sell it on Ebay and get an HX520 (available on Newegg for $90 AR with free shipping).

Actually the fans in the Corsair units are supposedly very audible on full speed, they just undervolt very very well which makes them silent on low speed.

You can tell this by looking at the sound graphs on the Corsair website.

The fans seem to rev up only by the load placed on the unit and not by temp which I assumed it would be a mixture of both.

A) Yes

B) No, but they should be the same. (Usually the higher power models within the same line are quieter at lower loads, if anything.)
