Cheapest black case with a quiet PSU for C2D and GeForce8800

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

Cheapest black case with a quiet PSU for C2D and GeForce8800

Post by SnowPunk98 » Fri Aug 29, 2008 9:29 pm

I am trying to build a very budget but nice system at the same time. I have picked out a power supply and case but am hoping that I might be able to get something cheaper that will do the job.

I will need it to power a C2D (Wolfdale), 1 SATA drive, 1 DVDRW drive, USB card reader, USB printer, GeForce 8800.

Any suggestions?

The Antec Three Hundred is probably the best cheap case around right now, particularly for gaming which is what your choice of graphics card suggests.

It does not come with a PSU, but gives you the freedom to pick what you want. Given a Geforce 8800 you will probably need to look at something in the 600-700 watt range. This is to allow for the power draw of the graphics card rather than the overall system power consumption.

The 680W BFG LS-Series is probably typical of the sort of spec you should aim for, and the price you should expect to pay. In addition I would suggest that you add at least one intake fan to the Antec, and also fit a fan to the side slot to provide additional cooling.

The Antec 300 or Antec Solo would be my picks, if you can find either <$50 free shipping. The 300 will definitely cool better, but the Solo isn't that stuffy with just one drive and it's a great silent case. Pick the one that's right for you.

Depending on your location, you may find the Coolermaster Centurion 590 at the same price point as the Antec 300. In my opinion, the Coolermaster is a superior case.

I had the Antec 300 vs CM590 debate last month and in the UK, they were both the same price. Clear winner - CM590

Antec NSK4480B would also do the job, it comes with a decent 380W power supply that can handle the system you specced out.
