Silverstone FT01

Post by edh » Sat Sep 06, 2008 8:09 am

Just spotted this new case from Silverstone:

It looks very much like an ATX version of the TJ07 which was EATX but should also be a lot quieter. Having a set of 180mm fans running at 700rpm helps. It also has sound dampening on the side panels and the HDD bay design looks much better.

I like it (assuming those fans are reasonable quiet of course)! I was thinking of waiting on the P183 but this might be a good case to use as well.

It's noticably shorter (~4 cm) than the P180 so it will be interesting to see how cramped it is inside. You save some vertical space by not having the space above and below the PSU but it still might be fairly tight in there.

I wonder how much space there is behind the tray for cable runs like in the P180? It looks like there is a small 'cable run' to the right of the lower drive cage which might help some but it doesn't go all the way up the case.

I read their article on positive pressure (using both huge fans as intakes) but I think I'd switch the upper fan to an exhaust. My computer is below my desk in a cubby which traps hot air and I think the exhaust from the back 12cm fan would just rise up and get sucked back in by the top intake fan. It seems like you could have some very nice air flow with the lower fan pulling in cold air and the upper fan exhausting. Any reasonable tower heat sink should probably have plenty of airflow from that giant fan at the top.

More info: I found one site in german than seemed to indicate there is space behind the motherboard for cables. It also said the case would be available on Sep 30.

3.0mm ~ 6.0mm uni-body aluminum outer frame and aluminum body

If that’s a minimum of 3mm throughout, and the 8.66kg weight would suggest it might be, then that’s a seriously well built case. From a silence aspect, the big hole in the front isn’t so impressive, and that 180mm fan trying to blow through that tightly stacked 7 hdd cage –not clever. Should of mounted the fan on the mobo side of the hdd cage, and had it sucking through.

Very neat looking case, but take the badge off the front fan grille -doesn't look right.

I'd assume most silent folks will remove at least one of the drive cages if not both. You're right about the hole in the front - I think that's probably the biggest "silent" question: how much noise does that huge fan push out the front of the case?

Yes, there is the option to remove one or both cages. I was thinking more of HDD noise, than fan noise.

Check out this thread for a lot more pics:

Seems very expensive (>$300!) for what you get though...

In a way this is just what I was looking for before I got my SG03. Both the TJ07 and TJ09 are way too big. I only hope they also produce other models like the TJ09 for the range too. That would be cheaper without the unibody section.

Don't quite know why the guy on VR Zone is charging that much for them. RRP is 165 Euros + VAT for the unwindowed one, the only one you'd consider from a silence perspective. Still pricey but seems a better case than the bigger TJ07.

VR Zone is quoting Singapore dollars. For North America, we expect the street price to be around $200 ~ $220 USD when it launches there. The first shipment should be available at end of this month.

Agreed. I'd pull the trigger on one when they come out but I'm a little worried about that front fan noise. I have a P180 (usually have to leave the door open) now and might get the P183 in order to run w/ the door closed. But it would be fun to do something different and I really like most of this case.

It all depends on how loud those giant fans are because it's going to be impossible to get silent replacement fans that are 18cm. Given that most quiet systems run fine w/ a single 12cm intake and a single 12 cm exhaust, it seems like you could spin those 18cm fans pretty slowly and still get plenty of airflow.

Look what I found today:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811163120

$220 + $25 shipping. They have the silver and black, non-windowed versions and claim they are in stock.

I'm going to rebuild my PC in time for Fallout 3 next month and this is very tempting... I probably should wait until at least one review comes out first but waiting is very hard to do...

The windowed version is available in the UK from After Hours Computers:
http://www.afterhours.co.uk/silverstone ... ce=froogle

As well as Scan just in case you like bad customer service.

No sign of the windowless ones yet though.

I bought the windowed version from afterhours and it's an amazing case.

the fans are extremely quiet even on full power although i don't have them that high becuase they shift so much air. I can also now have my zalman cpu fan running at 50% on my 5200+ clocked at 2.9Ghz running at 27ºC idle. It's a really silent pc.

I removed the top hard drive cage as i only have 3 drives and that leaves the front fan to blow over my graphics card combined with my psu fan facing upwards pulling hot air away from it.

if you have any questions or would like any photos (although my camera sucks) just let me know

First review is up:

http://themodbrothers.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=131

Not much new information, just some new pictures.

I think I'm going to get this case next week - I'm tired of all the standard P180 builds...

FYI I pulled the trigger on a black model last night from directron.com for $199 + shipping. I'll try to take some pics next week when it gets here (no shipping notice yet..).

Finally found a windowless one for sale:
http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product ... 1-BK&af=50

£20 less so it seems to make a lot more sense.
