HD4870X2 aftermarket coolers?

They make noise, too.

HD4870X2 aftermarket coolers?

Post by shleepy » Sun Aug 31, 2008 3:47 am

I got my HD4870X2 installed, and this thing gets LOOOUD. Surprisingly enough, it's not whinny like a small fan, but rather sounds like 6 mediocre 120mm fans... that are sitting on top of a jet engine.

Considering that it's a 2-GPU video card, what are the chances of a quieter aftermarket cooler appearing for it any time soon? Or maybe there are some already?

There are none yet for 4870 x 2 but considering that its selling fast, you'll get soon at least water blocks for it. After market coolers for x2-series are pretty problematic for the design as it needs two base etc.

So far the 2 GPU cards haven't sold that well so no aftermarket coolers are made outside of a few expensive waterblocks. However the 4870X2 is certainly more popular than previous models, so maybe we'll see an aftermarket aircooling solution down the line, although it wont happen straight away. Thats the price you have to pay for being on the bleeding edge.

Hoping for the same thing

I'll probably build a new PC in December. I'd love to put in a 4870X2 with a super silent cooler on board. With my 8800 GT I got lucky because it came with a very nice quiet cooler already on board so I didn't have to do any work and the MSI card with a nice pipe cooler was comparable in price to one with a loud stock cooler.

Wanted to check up on this thread... any news? Maybe someone's done some ghetto modding successfully?

This is why I crossfired two 4870 turobs. I know that down the road I can use water cooling on them if I wish to, the 4870 X2 is iffy at best.

Doesn't do me much good if I want to crossfire to 4870x2's.

I contacted artic cooling about the Accelero TWIN TURBO

Post by boe » Tue Dec 02, 2008 7:50 am

I was hoping they could shed some light on if they would consider a unit for the 4870x2 but haven't heard back since I sent it to them last week. I'm also curious about the issues with the memory cooling on the 4870 reported by people with the Accelero TWIN TURBO. [email protected] http://www.arctic-cooling.com/contact.php

I found something on the thermalright website where somebody used some variant of the HR-03 cooler and the V2 both on the same HD4870 X2 card. Looks like that might work in the mean time.

Wow, thanks for posting. As a dual 4870X2 owner, finding a crossfire compatible solution is welcome :)

Tests are a little biased though, the stock cooler does not reach 96 celsius with the fan at 2600rpm unless there is another card next to it or it's in a pretty naff case.
