92mm ver of Scythe SY1225SL12L? or [other] good 92mm fan[?]

Post by owbert » Sun Apr 05, 2009 12:04 pm

I am currently looking for two 92mm fans to use for the front of an Antec Solo case and i was wondering if there is anything that is like the
aforementioned scythe fans in terms of performance and sound? and also price--they cost $7.49 on newegg!

it seems that if anything i can mod the case and attach two 120mm to the front of the antec solo... but would this not be a good idea? i think the
only reason why it may not be a good idea is because some parts of the
fan will be blocked off and there are not vents for the entire portion of
the fan... and this could create more noise? or perhaps it wouldnt?

Nexus make a 92mm version of their Real Silent case fan. (The 120mm version of this fan is SPCR's reference fan for testing.) Otherwise, look in the Fans section of the main page and there is a review of 92mm fans in there somewhere.

I understand that Scythe make a 92mm fan as well, but I haven't seen in for sale in Australia where I live (although this isn't all that unusual, as quiet PC parts are much harder to come by here).

Noctua make a 92mm fan as well, but Noctua fans are somewhat falling out of favour as quiet fans here. They usually include some undervolting adapters that make their fans quieter as part of the package, which is handy.

thank you for the response. te 92mm fans listed on the main page are
fans that i am unable to find to purchase or are to expensive.

and update would as be nice :D

the 120mm fan for SPCRS reference fan for testing... is that also the one used on heatsinks? is that even advisable? what regulates the rpm ? the mobos itself or the temperatures?

i am also considering to replace the fan on my heatsink.

Yes.
owbert wrote:is that even advisable?
Yes, but. It will work fine, but may only last 2-3 years of quiet operation. It also depends on heatsink orientation relative to the floor. Fan perpendicular to floor is easier on bearing than parallel. The situation you have to watch out for is top-down heatsink in a desktop oriented case. In the end it depends how often you expect to be messing around with this stuff. If you just want to pick a fan and heatsink combo and expect to reuse them across multiple systems, it is probably better to go with a FD bearing fan, rather than a normal sleeve (as found in the reference Nexus), as it will last longer.

Neither, they use a manual fan controller to set to a specific voltage. In real life you would just turn the nob until you found a combination that provided the best combination of cooling and noise -- not caring what voltage you had actually achieved.

If you don't really need two 92 mm fans (maybe one fan is enough to blow on the HDDs), you could try the 100 mm Scythe Kaze-Jyu 1,000 rpm.
It comes with holes for 92 mm mounting too. I bought two from this e-tailer, but haven't yet swapped the 92 mm Nexus in front of my P150 (I'm lazy, I know...):

However, only one of these 100 mm fans fits in the front of your Solo (black P150).

+1 for the above. I added a Fan Mate 2 to mine and it's inaudible.

I used Kaze-Jyu's to replace the fans inside my Zalman 7000B's. Had to shave the edges of the blades off though, as they are too big to fit inside the "flower". The 1000rpm is very quiet and is running in my AthlonXP-powered WHS. Not a bad fan at all, a little bit of low-pitched growl, but certainly tolerable, as it fades rapidly at distance (inaudible > 1m).

They are a bit hard to find nowadays, but if you can get a good deal they are worth it.

Nexus Real Silent 120mm and SPCR existed long before Noctua and this choice was made before the Noctua would have been an option. It is debatable whether the Noctua is better/quieter than the Nexus at low speed, which is really the case that is most important on SPCR. Since they still have working samples of Nexus, why buy something new to replace them if that product is not markedly superior?

alas that fan sounds perfect but i would really like two fans to cool my
hdds. i am tempted to order two and see if they will fit on in my antec solo.

AFAIK two won't fit, at least without some major tinkering.
So you have 4 drives, then maybe two undervolted 92 mm fans won't be the main noise makers anyway.

I used that fan with my P150. You can fit one 92mm in with the 100mm, as long as the 100 is on the bottom.

However, after about a year it developed a loud clicking noise. I replaced it with two 92mm 1600RPM Scythe Kama Flexes. I think they're better.

wouldnt 1600rpms be loud?

i am a bit perplexed by this. it seems that the nexus and noctuas on sale in the 92mm range are all at higher speeds. around 1200rpms to 1600rpms. and their dba rating is 15 to 19dba on the sellers site.

isnt the lower the dba the better? i thought they would be lower. or is that they produce a noise that isnt offensive and/or noticeable that at 19dba its not bad?

btw, are Anti-Vibration Fan Gaskets better or rubber fan mounts? or both? or is that overkill?

To answer the questions in order...

1. Yes

2. Yes, lower dBA is better, however, do not believe manufacturers specs, only SPCR. Anything over 20dBa would be audible from 1m (not loud) in a normal quiet room.

3. Fan mounts would be better as it completely decouples the fan from the mount, whereas a gasket still transmits some vibration.

Yes (well, "loud" isn't exactly the word, but they are not silent). One needn't run them at full speed, however. They undervolt nicely.

IMO the 92 mm Nexus is quite loud at 12V and ~1,600 rpm, but under 1,000 rpm it's SPCR-quiet.
Mine currently runs at only 700 rpm (silent), since my WD6400AAKS with AAM=128 doesn't need much cooling.
