What's up with NVIDIA and AM3?

There's no AM3 DDR3 chipset from NVIDIA. Why?

Rumor has it that Nvidia won't do AMD chipsets anymore or that they might even drop out of doing motherboard chipsets entirely.

No telling how accurate those rumors are but they sure are persistent.

There's no such thing as AM3 DDR3 chipset really, nvidia 8300/8200 should work just fine for this. In fact there's a am3/ddr3 mobo from msi using nvidia 6150 chipset, which doesn't even have HT3...
8300 is getting old though so it's not surprising motherboards using it are am2+/ddr2. Not that 780g is newer, but it is still getting pushed (probably not for much longer though now that rs880 silicon is here), whereas it indeed looks like nvidia isn't interested anymore. And there aren't really that many boards using 780g and ddr3 neither (though there are more ddr3 boards using the higher end variant of the same rs780 chipset, 790gx).

nVIDIA has renamed 780a to 980a to meet AM3's foray into the market. BUT only ASUS adopted 980a chip and made an AM2+ board. Weird ASUS. Other than this, MSI made 750a and 6150 AM3 boards.

Yes, nVIDIA is vanishing in AMD platform market.

So maybe new ddr3 780a/980a boards indeed will show up (or even 8200/8300 based boards, which is the same chip after all anyway and hence still current - well 780a/980a has the companion chip nforce200 and 8200/8300 not but that's afaik the only difference).

AMD want to do their own integrated chipset, so maybe they're trying to push NVIDIA out. If I was NVIDIA, I'd start making CPUs and give both AMD and Intel a run for their money.

Looks like msi is also preparing a nforce 750a sli based AM3 board (that's again the same chip as 8300 / 780a but this time without the nforce200 companion chip but still SLI capable): http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodm ... od_no=1874

Currently nVidia's resources are not enough for R&D and for monetary sides. They would need to work someone like IBM to get some know-how in CPU's and gain enough monetary and R&D to actually start developing cpu's but it would take years...
