What would be a silent, fairly sized 1156 CPU cooler?
One for around $45-$90. Every CPU cooler I see is either too loud or enormous in size. Don't want water cooling.

There is no simple answer to the question, because it all depends on how much heat has to be dissipated. That depends on the load on the CPU, the temperature of the ambient air entering the case and the configuration of the case.
In most situations, under moderate load, that Coolmaster cooler that was just tested here would be fine.

IMO, Thermalright MUX-120 is likely the best balance of size vs cooling vs cost for the i5-750.

The supplied fan is very quiet. Not the smoothest sounding tho.

If you're not pushing for the highest overclock, the MUX is a great value cooler.
The other option is the Coolermaster Hyper 212+ (also well reviewed), but it's a little bigger and heavier than the MUX.
Both the MUX and Hyper 212 have bolt on mounting which ensures a better thermal and mechanical connection without stressing the mobo too much.
The next step down in size would the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro REV.2 which fits the 1156 socket. However, it is the same cost as the Hyper 212 and doesn't cool as well and uses the infernal push pin mounts.
MUX-120: 133 x 58 x 160 mm (L x W x H) weight: 590 grams
212+: 120 x 79.7 x 158.5 mm (L x W x H) weight: 626 grams
Arctic 7: 104 × 58 × 126.5 mm (L x W x H) 520 grams
And you could always just swap out the hideously loud intel fan with something much quieter. Lots of ghetto mod options on the net. Personally, I consider all the intel CPU coolers just part of the landfill that comes with their CPU packaging.
With air cooling - size does matter. Up to a point. You and your lovely CPU in the privacy of your case need to determine what that point is.

That's not a particularly hot CPU, so you don't need to spend that much. I just built a system with an i7-860 and the 212+. It's well more than enough cooling for that processor at stock speeds, and it's a bargain (<$30). I doubt you can do better in that price range. I was very satisfied with the mounting mechanism and installation process. The included fan needs to be swapped with something quieter if you care about noise levels, but that's true of 90% of the coolers out there, and it's still a bargain even figuring in the cost of another fan.
good cooling, not too big
I have a noctua nh-u9 cooler on my i7-860 on my 1156 board, it seems to cool it pretty well. Here's a link where it's actually on sale:

The case it's in has a height constraint that keeps me from putting in any of the really big tower coolers, but the nh-u9 with the 90mm fan is smaller but still quiet. You should be able to find one in your price range, and it should be plenty enough for an i5 750. But saying that you don't want a cooler that's 'enormous' is a little open ended, do you have any particular size constraints for your case or motherboard or something? Maybe just a weight issue? The big shuriken is probably also a good choice, but with the width you may have case constraints or motherboard issues (or even ram issues). The nh-u9 would probably be a good choice if the case is a normal tower or desktop case, and you just want a cooler that's a little smaller.
