a quiet Nvidia display card

Post by stingy » Thu Jun 03, 2010 8:54 pm

So I need a HDMI (with sound output) + DVI display card from Nvidia for my Hackintosh. I read that the ATIs often have driver problems that I prefer to stick with Nvidia for now.

Do you guys have any recommendation? I have the 9800GTX+ but it doesnt have HDMI + sound out put.

I know there are plenty of fanless ATi in the market, but not for Nvidia.

If he curently has a 9800 GTX+, I'm guessing he probably cares more about 3D performance, and a GT 240 isn't close to being as powerful. For similar performance to his current card, he'd have to move up to a GTS 250, which is just a rebranded 9800 GTX+ and has the same power requirements, which is why you're unlikely to find any notably quiet models available.

On the ATI side there's the HD 5750, which offers comparable performance to a 9800 GTX+, and even has silent models available due its significantly lower power requirements. Even the 5770 generates significantly less heat than a GTS 250. Of course, I'm not sure how well 5000 series cards work with OS X. ATI's Windows drivers have been fine for years though.

If you're not using the card much for 3D gaming, then your current card might be overkill, and a GT 240 or lower would probably be fine. Otherwise, you're currently going to have to stick to a card with a fan if you want an Nvidia card with similar or better performance to what you already have.

thanks guy, i will look into those cards.

I'm using the the hackintosh for Final Cut Studio for Video editing. From what I've read so far, Color/Motion etc consumes a lot of GPU power for live rendering. So far my 9800 GTX+ is doing very fine except I now need HDMI with sound out for play back on projectors.

The ATi drivers have loads of problems on hackintosh, thus I'm will stay with nvidia this time.

Any suggestions for the GT250?
