Currently available (2011) really worthy mini-ITX enclosures

Post by quest_for_silence » Mon Mar 28, 2011 5:03 am

I'm looking for some good mITX enclosure.

Up to now I've looked about those models:

Code: Select all

 L x P x H (cm) Model
18 25 7 A-Plus CS-Cupid 1
25 26 10 Yeong-Yang C582
18 29 10 Silverstone LC12
22 33 10 Antec ISK 300 (JUST FOR REFERENCE PURPOSES)
26 20 11 Lian-Li PC-Q09
26 20 12 Lian-Li PC-Q09F
23 30 15 LanGear Infinity
20 36 16 Codegen MX31-A2
22 28 18 Silverstone SG05
22 29 18 Silverstone SG06
22 22 19 Nexus Psile
22 35 19 Silverstone SG07
23 34 27 Lian-Li PC-Q08
19 21 29 Lian-Li PC-Q07
20 26 33 Lian-Li PC-Q11

May anyone kindly point me out any further alternative?
I would rather either Pico-style or ATX PSU-based enclosures (with or without any PSU itself), but with at least 60mm of clearance in the Keep-Out-Zone.

Thanks in advance for sharing.

It doesn't cope the KOZ requirement.

It cannot cope the PSU requirement, the KOZ one (and above all the "implicit SPCR" requirement. ).

I saw this. I didn't understand it when I first read it. Does it mean you want 60mm of space above (or below) the PSU fan? Or between the PSU fan and a heat sink fan?

A somehow convenient list from Intel: http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reselle ... 394803.htm.

I forgot to answer, ces: AFAIK (and so I mean for) the so-called KOZ, Keep Out Zone, is the space right above the CPU socket, so the one available for a CPU cooler.

The Antec ISK 300-150 is a good looking case with decent airflow, but its got a big almost 13" depth. Still, it has high reviews.

The Habey emc-800 cases are also fairly popular and quite small (9x8x3).

You can find both of these cases on Newegg.

One case that I am particularly keen to and attempting to find and purchase is the Akasa Crypto case. You will find almost no
websites giving any information towards it, but it seems to be an antec isk 300 without the extra inches of depth and less height.

And, of course, the m350 is always a nice case.

I'm looking for a good Mini-itx case to house a sandy bridge Core I3-2100 with mini-itx htpc myself, the Antec ISK-300/310-150 would be perfect except the rather poor psu and I'd prefer not to go picopsu if possible. Plus who wants to pay for a second psu? :) I wonder if antec would come out with a quieter high efficiency psu model...

Consider a Lian Li q-07 or q-11 with a small FSP Group FSP300-60GHS-R 300W Micro ATX / SFX 80 PLUS Certified Power Supply mounted as an ATX to make room for a larger cpu cooler (the ATX mount comes with the PSU)

How about the Lian Li pc-q9? It`s similar to the habey cases but has a better layout as the drives do not obscure the cpu cooler. Don`t know if the included psus are any good though.
110watt pasive psu:http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/pr ... dex=64&g=f
150watt psu version:http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/pr ... dex=64&g=f

So far my favorite is the pc-q11. Shame they don`t allow you to mount the psu with the fan facing outwards though (no side vents).

I'm actually building 2 mini-itx systems, one of which needs to be as small as possible, and one of which is 98% likely to be a Q08b so that there's space for 6 drives. So two different directions for two different purposes. Got the same processor (Core i3-2100) for both systems and a set of hard drives. Now it's on the hunt for the cases and mobo.
For the NAS Raid Box, it's clearly going to be the Lian Li PC-Q08B, already used for spcr reviews and looks like an awesome setup.

For the HTPC box, all I need is space for one 2.5" drive, 1 slim optical and small size to not take up space next to my tv.
The PC-q07 and q-11 are both obviously too large for this goal. As mentioned, the

I do kind of like the Lian Li PC-Q09, but the price is definitely wrong. It actually costs more than the PC-Q08B, which is ridiculous since one's a tiny case that holds very little. Adding a pico-psu type psu shouldn't raise the price that much. Form factor is no excuse for a big premium. Also lacking in good reviews regarding how quiet it can be. The Q09F version is definitely worse. From a review I found it uses a FSP 150 watt psu with 40mm fan. That can't be good for silence :)

In comparison the Antec 300/310-150 is pretty cheap, but the psu sucks. And I'm not sure if the 65 watt is enough margin for the system, it might be worth the risk to try that version. Either way the search continues to find the just right case, it took until the PC-Q08B to actually find the right NAS case.

It'll be interesting to compare the systems once they're done since the cpu + motherboards will be similar.

The Q09F includes a very nice FSP 150 watt power supply. If you like Red, Newegg has been selling them for $99 (I think newegg sells in US, Canada and also China)

That's a bit iffy since I read the FSP 150 has a 40mm fan, unless that fan spins really slowly or rarely comes on, it would be a risk. But on the better news side, I was digging into info for the ISK300-65 and it looks like antec said you could use up to a 100w power adapter with the DC-DC board. This solves my problems and avoids additional fans :)

good thread.

I'm on the same search as well for a good m-ITX case, to be used for a WHS 2011 build.

I've narrowed it down to a PC-Q11 or Q08 with a 2100T.

Either those 2 cases or an HP Microserver.

I just wish the Q08 would have been a bit smaller, and it would have been perfect.

The Array R2 is a nice one as well, but that thing is the length of an ATX case and cooling is not so good.

I`m using a Seasonic psu with the same form factor, the ss 250u (and if I remember right, the OP does too) which also comes with a 40mm fan. It stays quiet even at load, so a 40mm fan is not necessarily noisy. The problem is that such fans, like pretty much all ball bearing fans, are somehow buzzy and there is no option for a fan swap. The buzzing noise is likely to be more audible too, since a SFF case like this will probably end up on the desk, closer to the user. On the other hand, there is a version of the pc-q9 with a passive 110 watt dc/dc board.

I read... I think on newegg... of someone swapping the original 40mm fan out and replacing it with a 40mm Scythe fan.

It`s certainly possible but a proper replacement should be 20mm deep as the more common 40x10mm may be inadequate for the job (lack of pressure). There are no 40x25 sleeve bearing fans that I know of but Sunon does make some 40x20 maglev fans which should have very little bearing noise: https://www.elfa.se/elfa3~/elfa/init.do ... &toc=20906 I got to use one (I found it in my dead DVR) and it seems that their claims about lack of bearing noise are true.
So the truth is that there is a replacement option, it`s just not so easy to source and most people will probably not know about it.

Unfortunately the PC-Q09 with passive board is rather expensive versus the Antec ISK300-65 is only around $70 normally + $20-30 for a new 90w power adapter, which is the solution I'm likely to go with. I do think the PC-Q09 is a nice solution, but it priced itself out of the market. Anyways I find a fanless external adapter to be a much better solution for a silent mini-itx over any small fan :)

Are you looking for cheap steel chassis or something more elegant but more expensive aluminum chassis.
Do you need display?
You can consider Wesena ITX2, ITX6, ITX7 or Origen M10 (expensive but the best quality you can get)

Omg I'm so mad, was out hanging out with friends and the ISK300-65 was on amazon for freaking $33. Best deal ever, and not there for it. I am extremely disappointed. :/ That woulda been worth buying 2 or 3 even.

I know, holy thread revival! But just in case someone ends up here considering the PC-Q09F; I have one (typing this on it!) and it doesn't have a 40mm fan in the PSU, it's a slim 80x15mm fan. Which is LOUD.
Fortunately it wasn't too hard to replace. I used a nexus 80x25mm fan which meant I had to cut the metal case of the PSU to accomodate the extra thickness. Good news is that I can no longer hear my PC unless I am within about a foot of it, or it is under heavy load.

Apart from that I love the PC-Q09FB! The usual Lian Li build quality and looks. 8)

Soooooo overpriced!! £330 here from a reputable shop!
Consider the Wesena ITX7 for £109. Admittedly without PSU (and thankfully without dreadful VFD display), but for £221 price difference I don't consider this a problem

It is not overpriced. OrigenAE quality is the best, no question about it. You get what you pay for.

I absolutely agree with you that OrigenAE should make chassis without display for less. For many - who appreciate quality - it will be the best choice in this segment.
ITX7 (or ITX6) is fine, but when you take both chassis in your hand - you will see difference. Than you open them and look inside how they are built......
If price is most important to you - get ITX7. If quality is what you are looking for - M10 is the answer.

Wow, that's like more expensive than my entire complete Mini-ITX system. Yea, not my idea of a worth mini-itx case, price does matter unless you're a multi-millionaire.

I don`t disagree with the point you`re trying to make but perhaps those two cases are not the best example. The M10 is 3 times as expensive but the quality isn`t 3 times better. The M10 photo is more flattering but otherwise the construction is almost identical. Both shells are aluminium profiles, sandblasted on the outside, brushed on the inside, both anodized. The m10 does use countersunk screws more extensively and perhaps the anodizing is slightly better though it`s hard to judge from a photo (the high contrast in the M10 photo could hide the imperfections).

For the NAS Box I would suggest the Lian Li Q25.
The hard drive cage looks more solid than the Q08's and it's hot-swap. It#s not quite available yet, but it should be soon.

For the HTPC I don't understand what you want. Here are three different kind of cases to compare:
The SilverStone Petit PT-09 is cubeish comes with an external PSU and has room for a larger CPU cooler.
The Chenbro 719 is more like a small desktop with room for a TFX PSU. You can get it with different size Seasonic PSUs.
The Coolermaster's Fanless TC-100 is fanless, but expensive.

Not exactly. You have to add PSU and AC/DC converter to ITX7. (M10 is supplied with full PSU). Now - for price comparo - you should add VFD display.
I know - you don't need display, so Wesena is better option for you, but if Origen ofers M10 without display....
but the quality isn`t 3 times better.
You have to put them side by side on the table to see difference.
The M10 photo is more flattering but otherwise the construction is almost identical.
You can say the same about cars, but when you drive BMW M3 - you know why M3 is more expensive than Toyota Camry.

You can say the same about cars, but when you drive BMW M3 - you know why M3 is more expensive than Toyota Camry.
I accept your point about PSU & price. However, I am still not convinced, and unlike a BMW (or toyota!) I cannot go and have a test drive! And even if I were to accept the Origen is 2 or 3 times as good, I still wouldn't have the budget for it!
Do you have any experience with Lian Li cases? How does OrigenAE compare to them?

We offer OrigenAE M10 with built 150W PSU but without VFD and remote (still with window if you want to install your IR receiver) in the USA already.
