Asus GTX970 STRIX

They make noise, too.

Asus GTX970 STRIX

Post by Abula » Thu Sep 18, 2014 7:49 pm

Nvidia released the NDA of their new line a couple of hours ago, and the web is starting to get flooded with reviews, one thing that seems interesting is the gains in power consumption, but one cards starting to show itself in terms of noice, really impressive what ASUS is starting to achieve with this STRIX line.

TechPowerUp ASUS Strix GTX 970 OC 4 GB
ASUS has engineered their STRIX series with a unique feature. When the card is idle or lightly loaded, the fans will stop completely, providing a perfect, noiseless experience. Once temperatures exceed 67°C, the fans will spin up but do so very quietly.

Even with full-load gaming, the ASUS STRIX GTX 970 is extremely quiet and will be barely audible, no matter what you throw at it. Good job ASUS!

Image Image
Thats even quieter than the MSI GTX780Ti gaming Twin Frozr IV.... hope techpowerup reviews the new MSI Twin Froz V... in the mean time there is a one review i found on it, Guru3d MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming OC review

I really hope Asus start sending SPCR these cards for review, if there is a site that would really analyze them would be here. I still don't get why big overclocking sites to review cards that are meant for quiet setups.

I just read through Anandtech's article. Gotta love the 2x Gflops/watt improvement over Kepler. Looks like they also fixed some of the GPGPU issues.

Looks very tempting.
I wonder if this 'Strix' fan setup can be controlled with the Afterburner software however. Given how they are already set to turn off the fan below a certain temp.
Would be nice if you could lower the fan speed above that threshold as well, since the temperature doesn't seem to get that high.

Anyone tried one of the current Strix cards?

MSI has joined the semi-passive fan club with the 9xx Gaming line with 50C threshold
KitGuru:
The MSI cooler maintains temperatures around 60c-61c when gaming – this drops to around 30c when idle. The fans on this card don’t spin until around 50c – ensuring silent operating conditions (such as when watching a movie or general internet browsing).
MSI PR:
Hybrid Frozr is a throwback to 2008 when MSI was the first to market high-end, zero noise graphics cards thanks to fans that stop spinnin in low-temperature situations. Additionally, you will find Independent Fan Control on certain models which allows fans to spin independently of one-another based on component temperature below the fans.

This is a dream come true. I knew Maxwell was efficient, but this is huge.

nVidia had been insisting that card manufacturers disable the ability to do 0 RPM, even when using third-party utilities and firmware. I'm glad they ditched this policy.

ASUS has a good implementation here, but it's a bit of a false claim to call it "unique" with MSI doing the same. I look forward to see how they compare head-to-head. Either way, we win.

Asus n MSI shlould consider giving spcr a sample so this head to head comparison can happen from a site that focus on quiet components.

Kitguru has a review of both Asus and MSI. Not particularly focused on noise of course.

SPCR tests would be great in any case.

Another review with both the Asus and MSI card. No focus on noise at all, but some on the build quality and fan control.

Another option in regions where Palit products are sold is the Palit GTX 970 Jetstream. According to TechPowerUp this card features '0-dB Tech' which means that the fans only operate when the GPU temperature exceeds 60C i.e. it is another addition to the semi-passive club.

I would lean towards the 970 by Asus, for its lower power consumption and "Super Alloy Power components for buzz-free choke operation".
The 970 by MSI has "Hi-c CAP and Solid CAP type capacitors and Super Ferrite Chokes" which may be also buzz-free.
Power draw difference under heavy load is 31W in favor of the Asus, but the MSI ( uses 10W more than a ref GTX 980 ) has beefier cooling,
that despite the higher power, manages to keep temps a bit lower than the Asus. I'd like to see a review of the upcoming Strix GTX 980.

An observation: this GTX 970 / 980 release may turn out to be nVidia's "Conroe moment", from which AMD might never catch up efficiency-wise.
AFAIK AMD is only working on a water-cooled 390X that will be fast ( could be faster than a mildly overclocked GTX 980 ) but also very power hungry.

IIRC Tom's review measured power draw.

The 145w TDP of the 970 is more like a typical/average workload, rather than max load. They measured the card drawing over 200w. The low advertised TDP is more of smart and aggressive power tuning rather than actual low power draw.

The 970 looks good though. Might actually get this to replace my 7750Crossfire.

Kitguru reviews the Palit Jetstream for a direct comparison to the Asus Strix and MSI Gaming: fans didn't spin up until 68C, unit ran hotter 8-10C than others, but 2-3dB quieter.

The only site that has reviewed the 3 semi passive is guru3d, now with the Palit aswell, personally i dislike how little they describe about the noise characteristics....

Palit GeForce GTX 970 Jetstream review
MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming OC review
ASUS GeForce GTX 970 Strix review

Without having something like the minimum starting rpms or tone or how the fans ramp up after the threshold is achieve and how they scale them up.... i would think the MSI is the best of the pack in terms of having the lowest idle while the fans are off, having the memory with some sort of plate to help cool them, i like this out of not having fans running.... so the heatsink should help dissipate the heat, while the asus is plain bare memory that its suppose to be cooled by the air of the fans... that are not spinning.

The palit seems the worst of the three with very high temps compared to the MSI and Asus on load, but might be also the fans are spinning a lot lower.... but hard to say how much noise with all the graphs being almost the same.... this is why we need companies to give SPCR this cards =(

Either way, there is a great chance that ill be building a PC for a close friend in the next month, seems he is going with the MSi, ill do some testing if that finally happens.

PS steve, do you think would be good to edit this thread and kinda rebuild it like your recompilation?

I'm on the road, atm. If I get totally bored and have time, I could. Ideally, I'd create a new header post and graft this thread onto it- if that works for you and if my mad mod powers allow me to do so w/o totally f'ing it up. :D

Don't know when your friend's build is happening or his monitor rez, but GTX 960 is rumored to be released in mid October. I suspect it'll have GTX 770 level of fps.

I think I'll buy an Asus 970 in a few weeks - not available here yet.
Was planning on buying a card early next year (in time for Witcher 3), but this card seems like it might be worth it, and it sounds less and less likely that 20nm is anywhere close to being released.

Would have been great with some testing truly focused on the noise though. Some of those review site considers everything that does not destroy ears to be quiet.

Argh, and they're already starting the bullsh*t machine:

"After some experimentation we definitely feel that between 1,500rpm and 1,700rpm would have helped improve the balance of temperature v noise."

Yeah, because under gaming load the card reached 68° Celsius. The MSI card got down to 61°. There is ABSOLUTELY NO SCIENTIFIC DATA to support that those 7° will be harmfull AT ALL, especially considering that nVidia's reference cooler is 5° hotter still. And that's with the 970, the 780 Ti was probably 10° hotter and nobody flinched.

So finally some vendors implement sensible fan curves on select models and the idiot reviewers are pouncing on it, because noise has never killed a card before, but heat probably has. Although nobody has proof of that.

It's like when someone just decided out of the blue that 55° is the hottest a CPU should get. Intel doesn't say that, they seem to consider 65° perfectly normal and they only throttle past 90°. But some guy somewhere pulled a number out of his a$$ and that stuck.
Or the hard disk temp thing, where Google had that study a looong time ago that said "Yeah, keep it under 50° and you're good", but on the web, the dimwits are freaking out when their HDD reaches 40.

I hate this bullsh*t. It's like when you try to give advice on power supplies on a web forum - you know the machine in question draws 300w in a worst case scenario, so you propose a 500w PSU (because the real good ones don't really come in lower), but there's ALWAYS a bunch of dimwits who will swear on their 800 watt power supply "just to be sure and to be future-proof" and blah blah.

At idle, a 290/290X with a fan running was hotter than a 970 with no fan running? Really?

Here is a summary of all reviews of the three GTX 970 video cards with semi-passive operation that I'm aware of so far, for those interested.

My short notes:
- inconsistency between reviews regarding the temperature threshold at which the fans start spinning: 50 / 65 / 67 / 68 degress C, etc; not even the manufacturer marketing materials are clear on this - for instance MSI has a photo where it says "fans don't spin below 50 degrees C" but the photo right next to this piece of text shows two images, one with no fans spinning below 60 degrees, and one with fans spinning above 60 degress... so what exactly does that mean ?!
Image
- despite the fact that many reviews do noise measurements, the results are pretty meaningless: no idea what the noise floor level is, no idea what the fan profile is, no two reviews agree on the measured values, absolutely no care at mentioning if coil whine is present (while this is a problem for video cards, just like it is for PSUs, as a simple google search can prove)
- kitguru claims that the Palit card is more silent than the Strix and TwinFrozr, while techpowerup claims the opposite, the Palit is noisier than the two other cards; what to believe here...
- considering that semi-passive operation is a surprising new feature of this new generation of video cards, one would think that testing this with different games and reporting which games can run passively and which not would be more important than doing fps benchmarking on the same games over and over, in every review, just to show the same 2-5 fps difference in performance between brand A and brand B vs the reference Nvidia GTX 970 card; but somehow, this is not obvious to the reviewers
- the power consumption, when under full load (which apparently happens in a GPGPU scenario) is the same as on 780 cards; the innovation of this new generation is a much more aggressive new power management algorithm, and not magic pixie dust; quoting the review on tomshardware:
- how Maxwell behaves in the space of just 1 ms. Its power consumption jumps up and down repeatedly within this time frame, hitting a minimum of 100 W and a maximum of 290 W. Even though the average power consumption is only 176 W, the GPU draws almost 300 W when it's necessary. Above that, the GPU slows down.
- for a GTX 970, max is 250 W, with only short spikes at 300W
- If the load is held constant, then the lower power consumption measurements vanish immediately. There’s nothing for GPU Boost to adjust, since the highest possible voltage is needed continuously. Nvidia's stated TDP becomes a distant dream. In fact, if you compare the GeForce GTX 980’s power consumption to an overclocked GeForce GTX Titan Black, there really aren’t any differences between them. This is further evidence supporting our assertion that the new graphics card’s increased efficiency is largely attributable to better load adjustment and matching. 280 W average for the 980, 240 W average for the 970. 350 W constant peaks on the 980, 290 W constant peaks on the 970.
- tom: card idle: 15W / gaming 185 W / GPGPU 285 W

What i would love is a review with the 3 together.... who is the king of high end quiet computing.... MSI vs Asus vs Palit, all focus on tonality, starting rpms, temperature vs db.... so on, but i would love to see manufactures give samples to SPCR specially since they are building semi passive GPUs.

Thanks bbalex!

Over the years, I've found TechPowerUp to be trustworthy with noise and power measurements. The Palit card is clocked a bit higher and puts out higher performance (~3%), but at the expense of a lot more noise, power, and heat compared to the ASUS card. Even at idle, the ASUS card uses less power and runs cooler with no fans.

I think it will be impossible: we weren't able to collect enough money to test the GTX 750Ti Strix, how can we raise the sum for three high end cards?

I am also very interested to understand how in real life will impact that sort of "configurable TDP", the same card can be 150W or 280W with very big spikes, which *might* put pressure on the PSU in a randomly and repeatedly manner.

With the new "fan off" technology, I guess we have two points to consider: Which has the longest idle time (= fans off) and which has the lowest fan noise during load.

Comparing only MSI and Asus, Asus does sound like it has longer idle times, turning on fans on a slightly higher temperature compared to MSI, although the exact temperature seems unclear.

I read that MSI 970 has a "Silent Mode". Anyone know what effect this has on noise levels and performance?

All MSI cards i have tested, on the gaming app you have 3 options, one of them is silent, and it does lower the clocks, so yes it should lower the performance some, on the noise its hard to say, each card is different so only an owner could tell you, in MSI gtx750ti, its already inaudible to me at 1mt at full load so even if it could lower some the noise its imperceptible by me.
