P4 3.0C or 3.2C ?

Post by JimK » Thu Apr 29, 2004 7:06 pm

I was planning on using a P4 3.0C in a new system and then noticed that the 3.2C was only $60 more :) I would like the slight increase in power but...

I know there is a jump in power consumption and heat from the 2.8 to the 3.0 but is there much of a change from the 3.0 to the 3.2? It seems folks have made quiet systems with the 3.0 and I could do the same. I don't want to get in to a position where the CPU is much hotter. I would like to use a Zalman 7000 AlCu for its price and ease of installation in a 3700BQE.

Am I asking for problems with the 3.2C?

You could probably save your $60 and overclock your 3.0 to a 3.2 as desired. Best of both worlds! Better yet send that $60 to me!

I've heard great things about the 3.0c and plan on getting one myself probably. A guy on another forum I frequent, "Nuclear" has had 6 of them, they overclocked to 3.6, 3.6, 3.85, 3.85, 4.0, 4.4ghz. The link below will tell you what steppings each were, and what mb, memory, and cooling were used.

You can see his database at:

Or just his page at:

Hope this helps your decision :)

3.0C

Hi.

I have a 3.0C, and have a moderate overclock to 3.4ghz.. I put the vcore as low as my P4P800 would go. It says 1.525 in bios, but moterhboard monitor says its 1.6V... this P4P800 moterhboard is known to overvolt at times.

I am running Hynix memory -- which is known to overclock pretty well. I'm running a 1:1 FSB/Mem ratio.

I am currently running a fanless Zalman 7000 Cu on it; but I have the 120mm fan in the Antec Sonata running at 5V. I also have a 6V Panaflo L1A in the powersupply (Antec True 380S). That is all the fans I have. I run a passive ATI 9600 Pro (Zalman 80C HS on it).

You can read about it here:

Let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers.

According to Intel's power specs, the 3.0 and 3.2 both put out the exact same amount of heat (wattage) so theoretically, it shouldn't make any difference which you choose.

Hmm, thought this topic sounded a bit "deja-vu-ish" so I used the powerful SPCR search engine and found this thread that you started back in Januarary. Back then you were vacillating between the 2.8C and a 3.0. Now here it is four months later and you're going back and forth between the 3.0 and 3.2. If you stay on the fence until June, you can agonize between the 3.2 and the 3.4. :D

I know what you mean. Well the 3.0 did drop to the price of the 2.8 so that was good. Being "retired" once the funds set aside for a new system are spent there will be nothing to replace them so I am in no big hurry to jump and the increase in memory prices has really made me reconsider what and when. Don't NEED the new system until I get the new digital camera so I may wait until June.

Good thing is that I did a presentation before the budget committee and she said it sounded reasonable :)

Thanks to all for the info.
