Question on Zalman Fan Mate 1

Post by Dirge » Sun May 09, 2004 6:12 pm

I want to use a fanmate to quieten my CPU cooler.

Zalamn state "Do not use FAN MATE 1 with a fan having a start up voltage of more than 5V." But do not explain why this is the case.

What problems would arise if I ignored this warning and used the fanmate on a Silent Boost CPU cooler with 7v start voltage?

Assuming you're referring to the Thermaltake Silent Boost, then that fan is simply a Panaflo M1A so I'm pretty sure it'd start at 5v. Even if it doesn't, all you have to do is not turn the fanmate's setting all the way down and you'll be fine.

The fanmate 2 is out now, btw.

Dirge: some fans have a star up voltage of 6V or 7V.
I assume that the minimun voltage given by the Fan Mate is 5V.

In that case, if your PC is off, you have your Fan Mate at min. and you have a fan which its rated start up voltage is 7V, the fan won't start up, it will stay there, doing nothing when you power up your PC.

The start up voltage is higher than the minimal "functional" voltage, so once the fan started, 5V is enough, just check that when you power up your PC, the fan starts, then forget about it. ;)

The only reason they have the sentence "Do not use FAN MATE 1 with a fan having a start up voltage of more than 5V." is so they are sure you can't sue them if you use the product and manage to overheat any product since the fan didn't start.
Lots of people here at SPCR use fanmates on fans that might not start reliably at 5V.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

It is a Thermaltake Silent boost I wish to use with this product and I believe their fan specifications state "started voltage 7w". I doubt it would push enough air for my cpu at 5w so I wont have to worry about the fan stalling if I was to run it a bit faster.

Unfortunately here in New Zealand they don't seem to sell the Fanmate2 and the original model is quite expensive. Ill think about it as a rheobus may also do the trick.

Thanks again for the replies :)

You mean V, not W. :)

Tell me which controller you have, brand and model of the fan.
If you want to make a controller, I can give you a schematic, the one I did, but it's more simple, it's the one I'm using for my HSF.
It goes from 6.5V to 10.5V

That's one of the places I perused before posting here. I couldn't find any references to Fanmate 2 on Zalman's own site.

http://www.lownoisepc.com here in australia has it. essentially it's a fanmate1 with a few minor changes:
  • input and output are on the same end
  • it comes with some sticky foam to mount it easier
  • the knob is bigger.
power rating is still at 6W, weight is slightly up but that's it i think.

Wow, the Zalman web site looks a lot better than the old one.

Looks like I won't be needing to sell off all my "Fanmate 1's" any time soon. :)

It wasn't on the zalman site this morning when I checked either but they updated their site about a hour before my post (new design) and it's there under controllers + connectors.

The only other change to add to chylld's list that I can see is the new one has a hook for mounting as an alternative to the sticky foam.
