120mm Globe fan vs. AcoustiFan

Post by Ralf Hutter » Wed May 12, 2004 5:01 am

I don't know if it means anything but I noticed a certain similarity between these two 120mm fans the other day.

Hmm.

Yeah I also noticed the similarity...and I actually have that Globe 0.18A fan...and it is also very quiet on 12V and extremely quiet on 5V (though not much airflow)
The Globe is also much cheaper here, in Singapore abt SGD$12 = USD$7

And to add on, their specs seem almost identical
Identical Power Consumption, CFM & dB almost the same

Looks like even the same model number in your pic (S120512L-3M -- kinda hard to read though...)

Ralf, Just out of curiosity, what's your experience with the Globe? My extremely large sample size of one left me less than pleased with the fixed speed version of the AF.

Dave

EDIT Do you have a link for someone that carries the Globe? And is it fixed speed or variable?

You can get them with a thermistor here from mnPCtech.com. Not bad: only $8.50.

To add fuel to this fire, the Enermax 120mm variable speed fan (below) looks the same also, but that isn't too surprising becuase we already know that Globe supplies Enermax with fans for its PSUs, etc.

For kicks, can anyone compare this fan (preferably the "official" Globe one) to a 120mm Evercool Aluminum?

Thanks for the linkage :)

Hmm... whereas the Enermax does look a lot like the Globe fan, Enermax is much powerful & noisy. And it also likes to run at low voltages (say, under 5V). I've understood that the Globe fan won't start below 6V.

Cheers,

Jan

I had three to play with. All were thermally adjustable, wouldn't start at less than 6V and ran at around 640-650rpm at 6V. All sounded the same to me. Very little motor noise, very, very, very slight clicking and very slight wind noise. They were the fans that I used in my recent Chenbro case review and they kept the system plenty cool, even at 6V.

Mine came from Coolcases who, I think, sells them for around $8. They're thermally adjustable, but otherwise their speed is fixed (unless you run them at lower voltage of course. :) ).

The enermax shown is an M model while the the acousti + globe at the top are L models. The enermax specs are the same as the globe M model. http://www.globefan.com/12025.htm

Anyone think that the fans are the same as the globe ones apart from cosmetic differences?

Is it possible to hook a fanmate up to a globe and set it just at 6v and then use a rhobeus to adjust it to lower voltages after startup?

the Enermax is ball bearing

Post by NeilBlanchard » Thu May 13, 2004 3:54 pm

Hello:

Another difference is the Enermax is (2) ball bearings, and the Globe (at least) is sleeve bearing...

Another comment is that the photos are not always accurate: on the Enermax's I've used, the blades are *clear* and not "frosted" like on the photo above. Actually, the NewEgg site also shows them frosted, which is itself probably matters not -- but my point is...well, you've got the point, I'm sure.

On a side note, I just ordered another 120mm acoustifan to go in the front of my Acousticase 6607. I was really impressed with the one I'm using as an exhaust, as now my Zalman 400w PS is my loudest component by far.

BTW, all fans are being used w/ a vantec nexus fan controller.

120mm Acoustifans are $30 though... bleh. And they were out of the fixed speed ones, so I went for another variable speed one. BTW, you can call me the "Acoustibitch" since I keep giving them money.
