Re: New NAS on the block
Sorry for not spotting your reply sooner. The 16TB is a system limit and there are ways to overcome: - recreate the volume when the new config gets > 16TB (yes, very annoying to backup and restore because of this) - just make a new RAID set with the new drives, add it to the storage pool, and expand...

Re: Comments on planned setup please
The final tweaking had been put on the backburner for a while, but today I took some time to tweak... Currently went for this setup: CPU fan is 3-pin nexus, attached to chassis 1 connector. I have it configured in the bios for always on (DC, so quite high minimum speed), but I put an old zalman fanc...

Re: Thecus N7710-G 7-Bay NAS with 10 GbE
I personally own a TS-269 and I must say it is among the loudest small models (<= 8 bays) they produced. Compared for example to the TS-239 I also have. However, QNAP has been listening to (my) cirticism, and the new models (out since a few months) are remarkable. If there's a model to be tested, it...

Re: Comments on planned setup please
Now I'm probably going to attach the PSU fan to the chassis header in order to bring it down to 500RPM or even 0 if chasis temperature is low. What PSU fan? the X460 is fanless Hahaha too many PSU troubles... I meant CPU fan of course :D According to Asus website, it comes with ASUS Fan Xpert 2+, h...

Re: Comments on planned setup please
The replacement Seasonic PSU is working as it should, no more high-pitched noise. They also managed to send me the 460W model, I had a 400W, but I haven't seen any consequences of that. Overall the noise level is very good, much better even than my old 'silent' setup. Now I'm probably going to attac...

Re: Comments on planned setup please
Seasonic EU support has a bit of a problem... although I explicitly asked that they send the replacement to my work address, not home, so I could receive it, they did ship it to my home address :( No problem, UPS left a note with the tracking number (which I didn't get from Seasonic). So I altered t...

Re: Comments on planned setup please
RMA process done, replacement will be shipped. Note that to be sent the replacement first, I was asked to make a 120 EUR deposit, which I will get back minus paypal fees. So not quite painless but I rather replace first than send in and wait for the replacement. Oh well, I'll be glad when it works. ...

Re: Comments on planned setup please
It sure did sound a lot more than 2-3dB to me... But what's bothering me most right now is Seasonic EU support not answering my mails. 3 days and no replies is stretching it a bit. EDIT: got a reply shortly after posting here (and sending a repeat mail). Update MB bios, configure power savings of MB...

Re: Comments on planned setup please
Both the slipstream and the nexus ran at about 700 to 800 rpm, the nexus being a whole class more silent. Which is why I doubt it is genuine or in normal state... maybe transport damage. Once the PSU issue is solved I will be able to look into the fan controls, right now the PSU is more audible than...

Re: Comments on planned setup please
System finally build with a nice delay thanks to German postal services sending my ThermalRight HR-01 mounting kit to the wrong country  (and my Dell LCD deciding to give up along the way) So, this is what I went for in the end: - case: CoolerMaster Silencio 352 microATX - PSU: SeaSonic Platin...

BTW, running with a crucial 1TB SSD in my main NAS, it was expensive but manageable, I bet they will continue to come down in price.

Re: QNAP HS-210 passive NAS
The HS-210 is a weird product, it looks and was designed to be put in the living room, but it lacks HDMI. QNAP seriously blew that one. Don't buy it. Their second try is already much better, the HS-251 just announced does have HDMI, and has much better processing power, even does HW-assisted transco...

Re: Comments on planned setup please
need to bite the bullet... I think I'll stick with my first choice and go for the ASUS one. I found a description of the fan controller which stated it allows to drive fans at their absolute minimum speed, sounds good enough for me. And else there are still other tricks. Thanks all very much for you...

Re: Comments on planned setup please
yay, more options :/
I can live with 2 memory slots and other restrictions of the MSI, more concerned about compatibility with linux and power usage.
Going to give those motherboards another look and then draw a line

It was 2-3W total, 2 sticks installed. Only interested in idle gains as this system isn't going to be run full load all the time, more like short bursts.quest_for_silence wrote:2-3W per stick it's a relatively high value when a Core i5 base system usually averages on an about 40-50W power draw.

Re: Comments on planned setup please
OK thanks, looking into the MSI too. Where did you get the info that its fan control is better? Based on previous boards? And what do you think about reusing the HR-01 plus? I see you recommend other coolers, but this one is working great on a cpu with way larger TDP. Just not sure how good it is to...

Tossing out the NOFAN cooler, on doing more research I found several user reviews and even a review site that called it a low quality cooler. I have now been using a cherry stream XT model G230, part G85-23100EU-2/00) and I'm very happy with it, there is just a bit of higher-pitched noise that you can already hear if you wipe your hand softly over the keys, so I think it's from the way the keys are mounted, some tolerance on the keys prob...

New NAS on the block
(full disclosure: I run the Belgian/Dutch QNAP community forums which are independent user forums; I'm also a beta tester; I am, however, not employed by QNAP at all and you can find plenty of negative talks by me on their forums as I try to stay balanced) Since the news is somewhat out due to the C...

Re: Comments on planned setup please
Please take note that sucking air through a restricted inlet is usually rather uneffective (particularly with a passive CPU heatsink), and that causes a noticeable amount of noise: in case, probably you may do better if you'll find a suitable dust-filter (DEMCIflex? Silverstone ?). My current syste...

Re: Comments on planned setup please
Thanks for the inputs. I picked the case mostly based on the size, it's about the smallest tower I could find with a 5.25 and 3.5 bay. They are meant to hold an optical drive (BD writer) and a multi-card reader. So not expecting heat from them. There will be no spinning disk in there at all. Yes I r...

Hi, after 5 years it's time to build another silent computer as the old one is dying too soon. (long story short: Nexus PSU already replaced 3 times in warranty, what a crap! Gigabyte extra durable is anything but!) Here's my current shortlist: case: - CoolerMaster Silencio 352 (microATX - Mini-ITX)...
