Re: Building a quiet PC from scratch, need advice on compone
Harpocratos, which case do you like the most? I'm sure you'll get help to make it quiet. from the list of cases, available for me to purchase, i like P183 and Sileo 500, but i probably go with antec You wouldn't need to get fans right away, you could always upgrade. You could try out the stock fans...

That happens to everyone once in a while. Next time you'll get it right. Probably a wire was against the heatsink or something.

Re: Need help with Lian Li PC-A05NB
I know it's too late now, but did you use those plastic standoffs to mount the motherboard? No, I used regular metal stand-offs. They came with the case. Okay. I once built a system with an absolutely terrible fan (5000+ rpm) and el-cheapo case and I decided at the time just to use screws and not t...

Re: Memory madness
If x4 modules worked with the Intel cooler why would they need more voltage with a different cooler? It could be a number of things. Corsair probably only tested the memory with stock coolers. Perhaps one of those modules barely made it through testing. Or perhaps the Noctua cooler is using more po...

Running out of virtual memory isn't such a lottery. You can watch the commit charge, you'll know when it gets close to the limit. 3GB will almost never run out. There is a handy registry tweak to stop the kernel from being paged. I have found it will stop most swap file activity on a machine with pl...

I see the 5200 is 85W, the 7200 is 130W TDP. Do you want such a high power draw? That slow 92mm may struggle with the 130W I think. For comparison, although this is speculative, an 80mm at about 1400 cools my 69W CPU, you'd need twice that, so 2800 at 80mm, maybe 2500 at 92mm (or more, I don't know)...

Disabling the swap file works for most apps but some apps complain. I think setting a small page file, 32mb perhaps, would work (with all apps) although I haven't tried it. I think there are ramdrive programs that allow you to place the page file on a ramdrive, persisted to disk on shutdown, but ram...

You can reduce vibration somewhat by balancing the blades (of a desk fan or ceiling fan typically). If you are interested, I'll tell you how I balanced the blades of my fan. There was a hub in the center (that turned), so I used an elastic band and a small screw. I put the elastic around the hub hol...

Thanks jmke, it's nice too see all those fans lined up like that. I think we can say that blade shape has an effect on noise, the quieter fans seem to have similar blades (spaced proportionately, convex shape, forms an angle with the struts, small hubs). Bearing noise one can't predict but this revi...

Hi, The direct touch heatpipe base needs a different method of applying thermal paste, than most heatsinks. The problem with spreading it, it can trap air pockets. With a drop, or in this case, two beads, the force of pressing it onto the CPU squeezes it very evenly, and avoids trapping air. The ba...

Hi Kate, those readings are pretty odd to say the least. Here's some advice about how to apply the thermal grease because getting it right is very important (you can decide if you like this way or prefer what Neil Blanchard suggests, this way I know the paste gets where it should). I don't w...

You most likely won't feel safer because governments tend to do well when things go wrong. Luckily, the Second Amendment is a roadbl...

49W by the rest of the PC. What CPU is that? It's pretty low powered, not at all typical. 4850e with CnQ running it @ 1000MHz. At full speed the whole system (780G based) is 100W: assume the PSU efficiency is up to 75% that is about 75W. [At 1000MHz it folds about 30 pts/hour which is what it does ...

No, they're about 65W or so but the heatsinks were smaller back then. I used to like the Evercool heatsinks at the time (before I got interested in reducing noise). As I recall, the Evercool CUD-725 was one of the first all copper heatsinks and was actually overkill, the aluminium with copper inlay ...
