Re: New SPCR design & management
First off, it's been a long time since I visted SPCR but the news that Mike has retired is not a surprise to me as there had been an announcment before hand. Now as to older content, it doesn't take much space for the articles to be kept though I agree that anything more then 10 years old should be ...

Re: i5-6500 / H170 build, reality check
Everyone who's suggesting replace a working Hyper 212 EVO is full of lint. I have one and the stock fan is pretty quiet while it offers sufficient capacity to actually keep an E3-1230 v3 cool passively. The Skylake i5 should be even cooler, so there's little reason to replace a working cooler at thi...

Looks nice - had worked up a solid post on components as I hadn't caught you'd already bought the hardware. Oh well - win some/loose some.

Re: Semi-passive 12l build with a discrete GPU
Been a while since I've visited but here's my take: For the motherboard, I'd go with the Z series over the H series for many reasons - most of them being the more extensive options in the firmware. Also avoid any board with Asmedia SATA chips as they tend to include features such as USB3 and lots of...

Windows 10 - Just Say No
Did a clean install of Win7 - needed since it had been over a year with multiple un/installs during that time, so clean the cruft out. Used a nice app to grab the Win10 License Key so I can do a clean install after SP1 is released (Using Win7 Pro) but had to take it out after 2 days. Unstable as hec...

120mm Fan Feedback needed
Had looked at newegg and although I did find one of the Recomended Scythe, it wasn't from Newegg but one of their affiliates, thus not from them and as I've had problems with some of the affiliates in the past, I refuse to deal with any affiliates due to past problems. Noctua NF-S12B (seem to recall...

Cooler Master Hyper T4 Failure
I'm thankful that the Haswells are such cool running when under clocked as my Hyper T4 cooler totally failed me. Turns out you can not/shall not/do not ever want to mount them in the vertical position (mounting rails facing up/down) as the problem is vibration. The cooler eventually slid down the br...

Washu:
You listed the good/bad Intel Chips as to Raid features and as I have a Q87, I think it's one of the good ones.
What I'm currious about is whether the Intel Fake Raid is compatible with the Linux Raid/LVM software as I'm in the process of building a clean Gentoo Linux with UEFI support.

Re: be quiet! Shadow Rock Slim CPU Cooler
Mike C: Would it be feasible for them to use the Shadow Rock 2 mounting system with this cooler? If so, you should suggest it. From what I've read on the various reviews with them, they've been fairly responsive and if the change makes it much easier to mount - well, marketing may actually have some...

Minor Annoyances
Finally solved a buzzing issue - turns out the Samsung drive was the issue. The problem was a Misconfigured Windows Page File, had it on the wrong drive so moving it to the Seagate 3TB solved the issue. Due to the page file being placed on the drive, it constantly spun up/down due to it's agressive ...

Silverstone RL01B-USB 3.0 Case Build
Just finished assembling the E3-1230V3 Xeon (see sig for details) and I'm very pleased with it. Note that the SST-RL01 case is one of these Mesh Cases, so they don't dampen noise much at all even though they do help provide enough air flow. The case comes with a single 120mm LED fan in the front tha...

Thanks for the Boxee discussion Link - have to read it.
Looks as though the only ones even making a quiet 40mm fan is Noctua. Nice thing is they're an SPCR recommended brand in most cases.

Looking for Quiet 40mm fans
Looking for low RPM - less then 1500 40mm fans for use on Nth/Sth bridges (similar to what used to be needed for a Socket 370 Pentium) so any links would be apreciated. I've already looked at the Scythe Mini Kaze Ultra but at just under 20dB for less then 5cfm it's way to noisy Only thing I've found...

For a M-ATX board, I'd look at an AsRock Z87M-E and go with Kingston KVR16N11/8, should be compatible with the board but check the AsRock compatibility list. Avoids lots of issues and unlike AMD, Intel's really don't take advantage of much faster memory. For dev work, More is Better instead of Faste...

Re: Low Power mini-itx "Workstation"
Since hardware availability is a key issue, I'd suggest that instead of building a completely new system that you reuse as much as possible and move to a smaller setup. If your Xeon is a V2, check out the AsRock Z77E-itx board as you can reusue the current memory and CPU along with your working vide...

- undervolting in UEFI: reading the manual, it looks like the G45 can set the CPU voltage offset to a negative value. Waiting for feedback. This is what moved me away from the Asrock Z87 Extreme4.... Ca_Steve: In looking at the specs, I can see some of the reasoning as the PCI-e 3.0 spec changed the encoding from an 18b data/20b with overhead to 128b data/130b with overhead. As to power, they made no changes there. Just the encoding and bandwidth methods to increase useable bandwidth and it coul...

Re: To IRST or not?
Thanks for the clarification on the IRST issue washu but I'll stick with my original "No" with this explanation. The main issue I have with loading the Intel drivers revolves around Windows safe mode. Simply put, if there isn't an absolutely compelling feature in the driver, stick with the MS suppli...

Re: looking for a printer that wont screw me over.
One advantage of a Laser over inkjet is longevity of toner. Keep that in mind if you don't print much as all inkjets use a small amount of ink every time they turn on to clean the heads and depending on the model, they'll go through a cartridge a month even when not being used. Another issue is that...

Pappnass: Thanks for the info on the Chevy Spark. I'll have to compare it to the Volt. We've actually been considering a Volt based on our normal driving needs. Re: To IRST or not?
From what I understand, you need a smaller drive (16-32GB) to take advantage of IRST as it simply improves on the Windows Ready-Boost feature. In other words, if you're using an SSD as the boot drive then don't install the IRST.

Every new card intro'd in the last 5 years or so are PCI-e. The Asus Direct CU versions of the GTX 660 are nice cards and quiet. $230 seems high for the base clocked version, when you can get the ASUS GTX660-DC2 O -2GD5 for $170 in the US . Actually, I've seen some new egg reviews indicating that s...

Vicotnik: You're arguing the wrong point as to Haswell. The TDP is still higher then the Ivy Bridge even if the overall system demand is reduced by moving the power transistors/control onto the CPU die. I think the 89TDP versus 77TDP says it all and with the planned under clock/volt it wont make muc...

Re: Planned Green ITX BUild
As I stated, I can easily get an 80+ Seasonic S12-300w unit. Gold would be nice but unless it's down in the 200 - 250 watt range, it's not worth the additional cost. Current build configuration looks to be about 120-150 watts max. As to going with an SSD, I don't like them. For what a 250GB SSD cost...
