Re: Asus P5Q-EM G45 mATX motherboard
This has become my Dad's PC, 10 years later. I'm noticing the NorthBridge heatsink hits 75C under load (albeit this is with a C2Q 9500 and all 4 memory banks @ 2.1V). I'm thinking it's going to need more airflow. If the heatsink is 75C the chip itself must be at least 85C. Also, I don't see a valid ...

Re: iPad??? WTF, Are the Apple execs complete idiots?
The iPad was successful but it didn't really replace the computer or the tablet PC for most sane people. It become a content consumption device, a toy, and specific use case product like for restaurant PoS systems or smart homes. People here might look silly in hindsight but let's remember that prob...

Update: Replaced the tiny tower cooler with a Cooler Master T2 for real sustained fanless operation. Stress test now: 70C Gotta take this off my bucketlist now. Before http://i.imgur.com/9CsdunS.jpg After http://i.imgur.com/AhEK70O.jpg Notice I added a Zalman NB cooler for the Nvidia 9400 chipset.

Re: Mini PC Makers asleep at the wheel? Where's my semi-pass
I'm mostly talking about prebuilt systems. I'm aware of mini-itx and fanless nuc cases. The NUC problem comes down to cost. If it was semi-passive out of the box I'd accept it, but if I have to purchase an additional accessory for it, I might as well do my own mini-itx build.

Mini PC Makers asleep at the wheel? Where's my semi-passive?
I forget if I've ranted about this here before, but it seems to be coming up over and over again. Prebuilt mini pcs are just so expensive and unattractive. I recently had the opportunity to play with some Mac Minis. The thing is real sleeper. Sure, it has a fan, but afaik it's off on light loads, an...

Re: use Northbridge cooler as a cpu cooler in 2009 Mac Mini?
I ended up going with the only NB heatsink I could find. It's not big enough to be _comfortably_ fanless (reaches ~85C under load). http://www.moddiy.com/products/PC-Cooler-H.D.T-Technology-Northbridge-Cooler-.html Realized afterwards I should have just gotten a GPU cooler, that probably would have ...

use Northbridge cooler as a cpu cooler in 2009 Mac Mini?
I'm having trouble finding stock of northbridge coolers, specifically those with heatpipes, like the thermalright, noctua, etc. My goal is to make this old Mac Mini Fanless; it uses a 25W laptop CPU with a small stock heatsink so I think it's feasable with a large, heatpipe powered Northbridge coole...

Countdown... Fanless, Broadwell, i3 / i5 Class Mini PC
Feel like I've been waiting most of my life for an fanless SFF system with a laptop-grade CPU. It seems to be _just_ around the corner with Broadwell / Core M. So far, I've seen mostly expensive custom systems and "coming soon" type products. There's some nice Baytrail stuff, but that's Atom. I'm no...

Re: Zotac GTX 970 AMP! Extreme Core Noise Review
Glad to see doing this stuff is more popular/mainstream now. I remember just hoping/praying/ searching for reviews online that my GTX260 would support a modded bios for fan speeds, and it did. Palit had set it to a ridiculous 40% minimum. 70% was Leaf-blower tier. IIRC I changed it to 0%, which was ...

I've been watching a lot of LinusTech videos. He touches on silent components really often in his videos, and I found it weird that he never mentioned SPCR before. Re: Graphics Card Coil Whine; An Investigation.
thanks for this. I'm a bit of a coil whine enthusiast , this was a good read. While all coil whine is bad, I don't have too much trouble with graphics cards because of whining is usually load triggered, like the article says, only in some very high load situations. I had this with my GTX260 "mild" -...

Thanks for the tips guys, very interested in these options. NUC looks nice I'll look into it when it gets released. The PVR stuff looks nice too. Re: server with laptoplike performance and power consumption
I guess a third option is to just use an old laptop. The primary disadvantage is not being able to use normal expansion cards for special purposes... (video import card maybe?) There's USB-based tuner cards. Heck, there's tuner cards with NICs - you can just plug into the router. I wonder if there'...

Re: Motherboards and CPUs without annoying whine
I don't build enough systems to know for sure. I think its improving? I built an i5-750 based system 3 years ago (Asus P7P55D PRO), it had some whine, but it went away when I disabled some of the C-states in the bios. I don't hear any whine anymore - but my fans are only borderline silent. I then "s...

Re: server with laptoplike performance and power consumption
I guess my concern over max TDP isn't really warranted, since it will be idling 99% of the time. The only reason I wanted a low max TDP is to have the to option of using a passive cooler that isn't very large. Is there a way to safely lock (e.g. BIOS) some clock/volt settings so that the effective m...

server with laptoplike performance and power consumption?
Been poking around the interwebs and I don't see too many options for a high performance, low TDP desktop motherboard. I see some 17W TDP Core i3/i5 CPUs that are designed for laptops, I would imagine these offer at least 2-3 times the performance of Atom or AMD Fusion solutions. Are options for a d...

Re: searching desperatly a silent heatsink for gtx260 availa
I had Palit GTX260 216 core for 3 years. At stock the fans were way too loud. I was able to flash the bios using nvidia bios editor with a custom fan curve that made it "quiet enough" for me. As for coil whine, it did have some, but only when gaming with v-sync OFF if I recall correctly. I didn't bo...

Modern "cross-blow" PSUs for antec 300 case?
The antec 300 has the PSU located rather close to the video card and both seem to be competing for air. I'm wondering if it's good idea to get a "cross blow" PSU , the older layout where the fan would blow through the psu horizontally. I'm not seeing many of these on the market anymore... any popula...

I've always sort of wondered this, because I have a habit of touching heatsinks. The real issue right now is, I appear to be wearing a combination of clothing that delivers devastating static shocks.
