Wish I could say the same for the fan on my heat sink! I think you have a 70mm fan on a Socket A CPU. You could consider upgrading the fan only with a 70mm->80mm adapter. Combine it with a quiet(ish) 80mm fan such as the Nexus Real Silent 80mm Case Fan or one of the Panaflo Hydro Wave Bearing model...

Various web reviews report the system power consumption under load for the 4870 1GB as in the range of 325 - 345 watts. In my opinion putting that sort of load on a PSU of less than 600 watts capacity is not going to lead to either silence or efficiency. So looking at the SPCR recommended list, some...

For an explanation of what you are experiencing, I suggest you look at http://techreport.com/articles.x/14967/10 If this review is correct, the 4850 has a much larger power draw when gaming that you might have expected. But in addition, it is by any standards a hot running card and it is the combina...

You have an AMD socket A/462 motherboard and CPU. The existing cooler is using a 70mm fan which runs at quite high revs, and produces a fair amount of noise. So you would be better off looking for a complete socket A compatible cooler as a replacement. There should still be some around, eBay may wel...

Personally I would take a serious look at the MSI nVidia GeForce 9500GT Silent 512MB. This has the advantage of somewhat lower power consumption than the 9600gt and it does have an HDMI socket, so there is no need to reply on dongles. Contrary to what I posted earlier, the AGP slot actually draws power from the 5V and 12V rails in addition to the 3.3V rail. The maximum power is listed by various sources as 3.3v 6A, 5v 2A and 12v 1A. Combined this gives around a 42 watt maximum. This is why the later more powerful cards resorted t...

Bear in mind that more powerful AGP cards have a molex socket or sockets to connect them to the 12V rail. This is to get round the limitation on the amount of current that can be drawn throu...

The solution might be the CoolerMaster Wind Rider PWM Fan Hub, which sells here in the UK for £11, so not too expensive. You plug both the CPU and PSU PWM fans into the Wind Rider, which takes its power from a conventional 4 pin molex. The Wind Rider also connects to the CPU fan PWM header. Both th...

The Nexus 400 watt is a modern high quality PSU, it should work fine, and I do not think it is worth contemplating replacement. Modern graphics cards do put a significant load on the 12v rail, but according to Nexus' specs your PSU should be able to cope. It will all come down to the maximum loading...

To go back to what you said in the first place, your saw the Nexus Clodius case on special offer, and there was nothing on the box it came in that said exactly what the fan spec was. So you decided that as the fan label said D12SL then it could only be one fan, the well-known Nexus 1000 rpm model. B...
