first reviews are up. Some variation between them on Asus and MSI power use and acoustic performance, but all have Asus running cooler.

Re: GTX 3080 review compilation
Funny, I based my opinion on the same reviews . I get annoyed when mfgrs throw extra core voltage at the problem driving up power use. Of course, a sample size of 1 isn't a good place for a judgement call. <shrug> You know I'm the xx60 guy, anyway.

Re: GTX 3080 review compilation
At first look, I think it's a toss up between the Asus and the MSI Gaming X Trio. The former might be a dB quieter and a better cooler, but the MSI is slightly faster and uses less power for both 2D and 3D tasks.

RTX 3080 review compilation
Early look: a step and a half to two steps up from RTX 2080, but at the cost of additional power. Some of the aftermarket cards are pushing the core voltage/ power limit a tad harder than others. more to come. In brief: 2160p performance 35% faster than RTX 2080Ti. 320W TDP, but OEM stock OC'ed card...

Re: Wanting to Upgrade Nuc
Haven't seen any reviews for Onlogic's cases. HDPlex is a known entity. I've referred lots of people to them. Cases for IGP builds as well as discrete GPU builds. This could push you to a larger form factor/away from the mobile CPU performance limitations. Have you figured out what you actually need...

Re: Wanting to Upgrade Nuc
Here's the NUC homepage.
Given your case's 4th gen compatibility listing, you probably need to stick with 15W CPUs.

Re: Wanting to Upgrade Nuc
I think there are two different NUC chassis sizes. So, you'd want to make sure you pick the same. The chassis dimensions should be listed. 2nd: You've got a 15W CPU. Make sure what the limits of your case are to set the upper limit of what CPU you can pick. 3rd: You've got a 2 core 4 thread processo...

Re: quiet budget cpu cooler for r3 3100
more on this...the 3100 is in the 65W TDP marketing bucket, and when stressed is closer to 60W max . My guess is that'll run closer to 40-50W with typical max loads. So, it's not a hot running CPU. The stock cooler may work out well in terms of temps and noise. If it's too noisy at reasonable temps,...

Re: Need high CFM fan, one speed
Yeah, I don't know what's up with your fan, but you might check the supply to see if it's a stable 12Vdc source. As far as a specific fan goes...250cfm? really? Anything less than a 200mm fan will be spinning like crazy / really loud for that. Using Noctua fans as an example: NF-A20-FLX is 200mm, ha...

Re: Need high CFM fan, one speed
Another thing you can do is find a fan that'll run at a speed/cfm you like when driven by 5Vdc. Then, grab an old USB phone charger (pre USB-PD spec = 5V output) to run it.

Re: Need high CFM fan, one speed
Thanks for the reply. So....if I am understanding this, I would be safe with a two pin fan that would run at it's highest rpm constantly? I'm using a converter 110v to 12v. Yes. Make sure the 110V to 12V converter is providing 12Vdc and not 12Vac. :) If you want to manually control the fan speed, y...

Re: Need high CFM fan, one speed
Welcome to SPCR.
2-pin fans: Vdc, Ground
3-pin fans: Vdc, Ground, sensor (for rpm)
4-pin fans: Vdc, Ground, sensor, PWM signal
Even a 2-pin fan can ramp up and down if the source that it's plugged in to is ramping the Vdc pin voltage up and down.

This might help
https://www.amd.com/en/chipsets/b550
Motherboard chipset doesn't have PCIe4.0 lanes, but you get 20 lanes from a gen 3 CPU.

a little off topic...B550 boards are out. Have you considered whether or not they meet your needs? More opportunities for passive chipsets, cheaper.

Re: My dad thinks I'll fail at building a PC, and it makes me worry
Welcome to SPCR. There are probably lots of "how to build a PC" youtube videos out there that you can watch and learn from. My first suggestion would be to list the things you want to use the PC for: apps, gaming, video editing, etc...and what are the priorities (if budget limited)? That'll determin...

See above. I don't recommend any more $'s spent on the existing CPU platform. It's obsolete and power hungry. Figure out what your budget really is and then we can go from there. hi what do you think about if i get a 4590 used and and b85 mobo? keep my ram and heatsink psu? I already answered this.

for: it's cheaper
against: it's used. That said, my current mobo was bought used. It's a 6 year old platform. Still should work fine w Windows 10. Couldn't say more w/o knowing the model number.
