Sorry - I got stuck at the 512MB of RAM. I'll leave the quiet stuff to others :-)

How are you getting any gaming performance at all with 512MB of RAM? Are you running 98SE?

If it's not in the manual (and it usually isn't) I think you are S.O.L. Nvidia doesn't post the information on their site. The only FAQ that shows up when you type in "temperature" for a search is one that refers you to a driver bug fix on temperature reporting.

Just some musings... Define "safe". Safe to operate without seeing artifacts? Safe to operate without the card melting down? :D ICs have a variety of temp specs. 1) Max operating temperature to within specified parameters. 2) Max. storage temperature (typ 150C) 3) Max temperature over xx seconds for...

Someday, I'll get around to opening up my Sonata again and do some more fiddling around (suspend the spinpoint drive, open up the grill, etc..) and see if this temp goes down a bit. But, not today. :-)

I've got the Gigabyte as well. 50-60C idle...80-85C when gaming. I bought it through Zipzoomfly and have a 3yr warranty...so, not too worried if it fries. Haven't had any problems or artifacts, yet.

Don't forget the other bit of math.

P = (V ^2)/R = (7V^2)/68 ohm = 49/68....better get a 1W or better resistor.

Why not try it at 7V without the resistor? Just put the 12V on one side of the fan and the 5V on the other.

Just pointing you in that direction as it might be a mobo related problem...or you could just have a bad stick of ram. For the latter, did you try removing the other 2 sticks and just booting with the new stick in slot 0?

I bought an AMS Venus enclosure for my backup drive (Seagate 200GB P-ATA). Low RPM 80mm fan + drive at idle is pretty quiet. Not silent, but, pretty quiet. It has a brick power supply, supports both Firewire and USB2.0, supports drives up to 400GB, I believe. Here's another dude's review of the USB ...

Performance of the x1300pro appears to be very inferior to a 6600GT...so by comparison...very inferior to a 9800pro.

It doesn't appear to be in stores, yet.

AGP version is yet to be seen.

First thing - get more RAM. That's your botteneck at the moment. XP and all of the glopped on dlls, etc...will consume 250MB to 300MB or more of your 512MB. Many games will disk thrash with less than 1GB total sys memory ...and some like to see 1.5GB or more...of course, if you are running 98SE, tha...

Oil has been used for cooling other systems for a long time.
- the electrical transformer hanging from the pole outside your house.
- also used occasionally for temperature testing of ICs.

I guess it really boils down to your level of "good enough".

If I run WoW at it's highest level of detail with AA and AF on max, my system (2800+ Barton, 1GB RAM, 6600GT) will bog down. But, at moderate vid quality, it plays just fine.

According to this test, it appears, that to fully take advantage of the newer cards, you'll also want to upgrade the CPU etc  8) So depending on what upgrades you plan to do in the future... No place for a fan...maybe you've got a special sonata II then ;-)

From the Antec Sonata IIweb page:

Cooling System:
- 1 rear 120mm Tricool fan (standard) with 3-speed control to balance quiet with cooling
- 1 front 120mm case fan (optional) 25mm thick

An intake fan mounted in front of the HDD will drop the temp to something reasonable...as 65C is NOT! :-)

Check out the recommended fan page for a slow moving and quiet 120mm fan.

small fans, like 60mm, need to run fast in order to get the cfm needed to cool the gpu. 6800rpm is zooming!

43C is a pleasantly low temp. is that at idle or while gaming, etc...?

Everest Home Edition.

Provides temps, voltages, fan speeds. Collects all of the system hardware config data together as well.
