Re: Cold fusion ressurected?
Besides, fabrication is probably far more expensive than the materials. I'm just extrapolating here, but it sounds like whatever the metal is, it has to be made into an extremely low-density, open-celled foam with a very consistent cell size, something that's damn tricky to do. Isn't this what manu...

For clean holes I prefer to use a drill with a circular hole cutter bit. Same as for cutting a fan hole, just with as smaller diameter cutter bit. A bit of sanding to remove any burrs or you can line the holes with a protective strip of rubber to protect the cables. Of course this works best for rou...

Apart from the slight problem that there's a heatpipe connecting the NB heatsink to the VRMs - you can't see it on the photo, but it's there (unless it's been removed). Rotating the heatsink would be impossible without cutting the heatpipe, although if the VRMs are in fact heating up the northbridg...

OK, we all agree that the NB heatsink should be turned 90 degrees. You might also consider replacing it with something taller (like one of the Zalman NB heatsinks), but you would have to cut away part of it to get it under the CPU HSF. As for airflow, there's a 120 mm fan to the right in the image. ...

If a new case is out of the question: Since the Zalman is pointed to the rear, remove the 80 mm rear fan and then make a duct to connect the 9500 to the rear opening. Then place a 120 mm on the side panel and add a foam lined duct on the outside of the case to direct the sound and case exhaust to th...

I paid $61 Canadian in Ottawa 2 weeks ago which is equivalent to about $57 US these days. Very quiet for my fileserver's external backup unit.

If you search for V1000 and suspension you will find several threads about silencing hard drives in this case. This link will show how to remove the plastic hard drive drive rails:

I just found this Nvidia 8600 GTS card on the MSI website: model = NX8600GTS-T2D256EZ-HD http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=NX8600GTS-T2D256EZ-HD&class=vga The webpage shows heatpipes and claims to be silent so it must be passively cooled. Would this be the most powerful passively c...

Flipping the power switch on the PS will not drain it. Unplug the PS from the wall outlet and leave its own switch in the ON position. Next, press the computer's power switch in and hold it in for 10 seconds. This will drain most of the power from the PS. Your fans or lights may come on very briefly...

This problem always bugs me too. I usually count the number of motherboard standoffs (usually brass posts) and then count the two type of Philips screws. The screws that are the same in number as the standoffs are the ones I use for them. The coarsest ones are for fans and securing expansion cards. ...

Not that an 800mhz P3 really requires much cooling...my wife's old PIII-800 used the original heatsink with the fan simply removed, and a very crude duct to force a decent fraction of intake air toward it. similar to what I did: - replace the PS with a quiet one or at least replace the fan in the P...

First make sure that in Device Manager the computer type is "ACPI PC" and not "Standard PC". This is usually determined by a Power Management setting in the computer's BIOS. However, since you did not have this problem with your previous PSU, this is likely not the reason for the problem. Microsoft'...

The P150 is in Ottawa (eastern Canada) for $187 (Cdn) = $159 US at a local shop, RB Computing. No indication as to the colour though. Excellent store.
