Is there a review of the HR-03 somewhere around here? I skimmed the review, both look reasonable to me. I saw the issue they had with cooling the voltage regulators. Would there be room to attach small heatsinks to the voltage regulators? I have an 8800GT with the Arctic Cooling Accelero, or whateve...

I have my keyboard plugged into the p/s 2 port, and my mouse connected to the USB. I had a graphics card plugged into the pci-e slot, removed it and tried to use the onboard video, but it didn't change anything. Right now the graphics card is removed and the onboard video is connected to the monitor...

Hi Neil, I'm pretty sure the PSU is working, as it's fan turns on, and so does my CPU fan, even when I don't get POST beeps. I have since unplugged the CPU fan, though, just in case. Right now I'm starting it by shorting the power switch header on the board. I've been testing with the onboard video....

Need help, System won't POST
Hi all, I could use some help diagnosing a problem with my pc. You could say it's a little bit too silent these days. 8) I'd been having some problems booting lately, where it would start to POST, but shutdown and restart again before finishing. It would do this a few times, and eventually POST succ...

PPW Comparison
I found this article comparing PPW for a few different systems. Haven't had a chance to read it too closely, but looks interesting.

Things I'm tired of hearing: 1. Partisan bickering. Can we please redirect our energy away from hating whatever party we don't belong to, and take a moment to calmly evaluate each party's stance? Whether or not an idea is morally reprehensible to you--e.g., the death penalty--you should be able to r...

Best Way to Partition HDD?
Like it says above, what's the best practice for partitioning a HDD? My goals are ease of maintenance--in case of O/S reinstall, for example--and performance improvement, if possible. I'm not so concerned with reliability, as I have a RAID-1 array in place. I've got 500GB to work with.

Nvidia GPU folding question
I've started folding on my 8800GT, but I'm not entirely sure that I've set up the client correctly. All I needed to do was download the CUDA drivers from Nvidia and download the new client, and it started right up. But in the display it says the current work unit name is "test protein A," and it onl...

Based on the above, it sounds like building this system wouldn't be worth it, given that it would also be possible to build separate systems that would provide greater performance anyway, especially if I can use Intel processors. As I mentioned above, I wanted to use AMD CPUs because I could fit AM2...

Hypothetical System: Worth It?
A friend and I were discussing putting together a server for a project we were working on, and were wondering if it would be worth upgrading it into a folding box. The question is, how much of a return would we get? If we built it, I think we would go with a dual Opteron 2346HE system. It's a Barcel...

Formatting External Drive
If I buy an OEM drive for use in an external enclosure, will I need to format it first? If so, can I do this with a USB enclosure? I presume that if this is possible, it will take a long time. I'm concerned because at the moment I only have access to my laptop, so I can't connect the drive to an ATA...

The Antec offerings are indeed favored around here, but it is by no means impossible to build a quiet PC in another case. Your temperatures are very low, but they are not load temperatures, which I think are more important. However, I would assume that your load temperatures would also be very accep...

I have an Ultra Micro-Fly, which is think is identical to this case. The problem with mine was hard disk vibration. I tried a very basic decoupling using rubber washers, but it still vibrates audibly. As this is Silent PC Review, this single problem is a big deal to me. I rest my heavy IBM keyboard ...

There has to be a resistor in series with the diode, to limit the current through it. I think the forward voltage through white LEDs is pretty high, maybe as much as 4V, so whatever you power it with must provide at least that much voltage. Assuming a 4V forward voltage, and 20mA current, running it...

I wouldn't put too much faith into BIOS voltage indicators. They're not that accurate. If you're satisfied with the noise level, and your system is stable, then just stick with the 450 watt unit. My S12-380 is very quiet, certainly quieter than my hard drives. Personally, I think an S12 is quiet eno...

I do like how they list "mirror-finished base" as an advantage. What, exactly, is the benefit of a polished base if in the end, you only get "moderate performance?" That's the beauty of review sites. They can always find something positive in even the worst products, lest their supply of review samp...

I would imagine it is a PWM controller as well. The big IC in the center is a microcontroller (I can see the Microchip brand logo pretty well, but that's about it). I remember reading some reviews of the sunbeam device, I think the problem with it was the software? That seems like the most likely we...
