Re: Quest for a 13" dead silent!
BTW T500-series thinkpads are quieter than T400-series - you can have pretty much the same components inside (=same thermal load), but 500-series has larger diameter fan and cooling vents, so the fan has to run at lower rpm to exhaust the same amount of heat.

Just be careful to not vacuum out any small components like jumpers.. Happened to me once with desktop PC.
I've used only very low power setting since then

Re: Silent / Quiet and powerful notebook?
Thinkpad T & X series have been the choice for silent&powerful since T/X61 series.
They always silently hum in the background, and noise type stays soft even undel full load.
Look at notebookcheck.net for reviews with decibel measurements.
And I'm typing this with Dell, so not biased

Re: Samsung Series 9 Ultra Portable Notebook
Nice to see a laptop review, I'd like to see more of these. Acoustics are often disregarded totally in many reviews on other sites (and SPL measurements are rare, except notebookcheck.net). Knowledge about laptop's noise is very important before buying, as on stores there is too much background nois...

Well at the moment Dell 10 inch minis are probably most easily available choice. Currently available model (N-series atom) http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Dell-Inspiron-Mini-1018-Netbook.36739.0.html Older model (Z-series atom): http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Dell-Inspiron-Mini-10-Netbook.1...

Re: List of fanless laptops
Also, availability of LG X300 seems to be quite limited globally.
Asus T91 tablet is fanless, but quite unattractive otherwise.
And so are iPads and some android tablets, but they are not laptops as described in the header so we can ignore them in this thread.

With 6-cell. Could be up to 7-8 hours of just idling, but that 4 hours was wifi-surfing or video playback. Cut the numbers to half for 3-cell.
In reviews it has been around the same, or little longer, like 2h40min if wifi-surfing with 3-cell at http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2366

X1 also has matte screen instead of reflective, which might be huge plus, if you intend to use the laptop in areas where you can't control the amount and direction of light. On the other hand, mini1012 (newest mini10) with Atom N450 has over two times longer battery life (my X1 used to get 4 hours o...

Strangely when the system was idling using the Balanced and Power Savings power schemes, the CPU ran at 1.6GHz with a core voltage of 0.875V according to CPU-Z. In High Performance mode it idled at 1.2GHz but with a higher voltage (0.925V). That 1.6ghz is actually 800mhz detected incorrectly, becau...

Added Vaio P to the list (and updated first posts). Nice thing is that because of Dell, you can grab a fanless laptop for quite cheap compared to 2005 (Mini 10v 300$ vs. Latitude X1 1000+$), bad thing is that Latitude X1 is still better :) Too bad there is still isn't many models available, hopefull...

Lenovo X200 tablet is propably quietest of easily available and affordable ones. There's many rugged models (toughbooks, getac, nec shieldpro etc) that are fanless and very quiet, but also very expensive and hard to find. Check out http://www.tabletpcreview.com and http://www.notebookcheck.net

Yep the new T-series seems to have lower fan speeds, level 1 is down to 1800 rpm from 2800, which already was tolerable on T61. And tpfancontrol works. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3792202&postcount=27 Despite my tests with fanless T61, I wouldn't run it fanless, as even the temper...

Lenovo Thinkpad T61 fanless operation
I'd like to report some tests with T61 and fanless operation. It's a 15.4" inch model, with T7100 cpu, 2 GB RAM, Hitachi 7200 rpm 100 GB hard drive and Intel x3100 graphics. When running at 800mhz and fan stopped with tpfancontrol, cpu temperature is around 60 celsius in light use, and tops out at 8...

Laptop reviews?
I think many readers of SPCR would be interested in laptop reviews. Notebookreview.com has lot of good laptop reviews, and they have noise sections. But they don't have actual dB measurements! Full reviews wouldn't be necessary, even just a table of db measurements at idle and orthos+3dmark(+defrag)...

Noise from our personal computing can be lowered by many ways. Here's some points that usually aren't discussed much. - Reduce the amount of computers. Less computers = less noise. For most of us, one is enough. If it's a notebook, you can have your computing environment with you always, and use wir...
