Hey Chris, I don't know the answer to your question, but I have some advice. Make a complete copy of one of your disks to another hard disk before you do the changeover, and test that you can boot from it on your Bad Axe (what an awesome name for a board!). Hiren's boot CD has a number of utilities ...

If it were me, I'd just buy a new 250GB notebook IDE drive (your machine would not support SATA) to replace your existing 15.4 GB drive, and transfer all the data. It should be about the same as your existing drive in terms of noise. One issue you may encounter is that the BIOS on the laptop may not...

Sounds nice. Are there any passively cooled 4670s? If so, I'd go for one of those. On the PCIe slots.. even if you don't expect to ever install two video cards, the more PCIe slots the better as far as future proofing goes. Over the next few years I suspect we'll see more and more cards (and not jus...

But believe me, it's quite satisfying when you get the LAN booting working. Windows booting from a RAM disk over Gigabit Ethernet is nice and speedy

Hey, I have done this with Windows XP using the gPXE bootloader, the WinAoE ATA over Ethernet client, booting from LAN from a Linux machine running vblade, the ATA over Ethernet target. Not sure about Vista support, you will have to look into it. Start here: http://etherboot.org/wiki/index.php It wi...

Hey, This method takes a bit of setting up, but it worked well for me: - Install Windows ATA over Ethernet driver on your machine: http://winaoe.org/ - On a Linux machine, install the vblade ATA over Ethernet target - Create a disk partition on the Linux machine in RAM (/dev/shm), to remove disks as...

vaka, if you are running Linux, you would probably be better off running Linux software raid than a "fakeraid" controller. With the cheap onboard RAID devices, you don't get any hardware acceleration, but require proprietry drivers which are not always available for Linux. Linux software RAID is mor...

vaka, I wouldn't bother with ECC RAM, Xeon processors etc. For what you want to do, I second the suggestion of an AM2 processor. I'd also go for a 780G based motherboard with six or more SATA ports. For under AU$500 I built a box like this with 8GB of RAM. I notice you are in Australia. If you reall...

I've got it in my head that I'd like to build a case. I'm a complete n00b when it comes to mechanical design and metalworking, so I decided to start with something that doesn't seem too ambitious. I'll use an existing motherboard tray / case rear section: http://er6australia.com/images/pc/mobotray.j...

Just thought of something else: you might be able to find out which bus the NIC is on in Device Manager. Select "View Devices by Connection" and see if it is under PCI or PCI Express. I'm not sure if Windows will differentiate PCI and PCI Express though; the PCI I'm on now doesn't have PCIe so I can...

joseph, that's interesting that you have had no problem. For me, MTU was definitely the limiting factor with a pair of HP dual port Gigabit NICs. I suppose there are a lot of other variables like operating system, CPU and so on. ACook, it's also quite possible that that your disks are a bottleneck. ...

It is odd that the autodetection should make any difference to the speed. Was it auto negotiating to 1000 Mbps half duplex? As for jumbo frames, yes it will be in the driver properties tab if you are running Windows. Do you have a range of options in a dropdown for Maximum Frame Size, or do you have...

+1 jumbo frames. This should definitely improve your throughput to allow you to get close to wire speed. Do try with a crossover cable to see if the switch is having any effect on the throughput. A decent Gigabit switch should have a fat enough backbone to transmit and receive at wire speed on all p...

I'm a bit confused that you only have two drives in your machine. What is the limitation that prevents you from adding more internal hard disk drives? Are you out of SATA ports? 3.5 inch drive bays? If it's SATA ports, you could add more with an expansion card. If it's drive bays, you could adapt 5....

Fanless PCI Express x1 video card
Hi all. My HTPC is nearing completion. However, I have discovered that the onboard VIA Unichrome graphics chip is a bit lacklustre in terms of performance. Also, I would like something with TV output of some kind. My only free expansion ports are PCI, or a single PCI Express x1 slot. Does anyone kno...

So, I'm in the market for one of these. Given that I use a PC >12 hours in the average day (work + leisure), and I'm starting to feel some mousing pain, I think it's worth it. Just looking at the way I grip the mouse, the first thing that strikes me is that your average mouse is a little "narrow" fo...
