Re: Hardware for small, quiet home router/server
If your initial use case is just a router, you can do that easily with a newer dd-wrt compatible unit, plus it will include wifi and 4 or so gig ports, and run on a couple of watts from a reasonably efficient 12v wall wart. It will be difficult if not impossible to get these things separately for le...

Re: List of fanless laptops
My chromebook is indeed the ARM version. While I do use GMail for one account (almost entirely for the instant messaging), I do most of my email through Roundcube webmail. I have seen non-free webmail apps that claim to support multiple accounts, such as xandmail, but I don't have any experience wit...

Re: Glutton for punishment - Silencing a Poweredge 2950
Well guys, I hate to say it, but I think I've had a change of heart. Not because i think the project is too difficult, but because I think the end result ends up not being worth the effort. I used the Phoronix Test Suite to benchmark this guy, and for grins I ran the same benchmark on my desktop. I ...

Re: Glutton for punishment - Silencing a Poweredge 2950
Thanks for the replies, guys. So first off, the stock heatsinks. The fin spacing isn't as generous as my Ultra Extreme 120s, but I'm not sure its terrible. A shot on its own: http://i.imgur.com/U0rxYV1.jpg A shot with a monitor behind it so give an idea of the space between fins: http://i.imgur.com/...

Re: Glutton for punishment - Silencing a Poweredge 2950
Thanks for the reply! The replacements for the 60MM fans, I'm not targeting high CFM. In fact, if I am able to set the alarm threshold to 0 on the BMC, I might skip them entirely. Absolutely the way to go in my mind is to cut the case to allow mounting off 120MM (or 140mm) fans. I'm convinced that t...

Re: Glutton for punishment - Silencing a Poweredge 2950
I have to say I'm a little surprised at the feedback so far. I'm not new to servers, and I'm not coming at this from an uneducated position. The 2950 series supports (and I have) Clovertown Xeons, which include VT-x virtualization. The enhancements since then are nice, but Clovertown gets the import...

Re: Glutton for punishment - Silencing a Poweredge 2950
Well I have a few environmental advantages that should help me, such as not being in the middle of a stack of other hot running servers, not to mention a workload that shouldn't stress it out too much. That should be worth a few points. http://i.imgur.com/nQ6wcSU.jpg The ATX/EATX thing is a no-go, t...

Re: List of fanless laptops
Does anyone know what GMail is like on a Chromebook? Is there a separate app/client for GMail, or does it just bring up the regular GMail website? Do Chromebooks have all the same Google ads in GMail and elsewhere that the Chrome web browser for PC has? I've had my samsung chromebook for a few mont...

Glutton for punishment - Silencing a Poweredge 2950
Hi Guys, I find myself needing more virtualization capability than I'm getting out of my HP N40L Microservers. I've been getting by with virtualbox on my workstation, but that brings its own set of problems. I've had a small stack of Poweredge servers sitting in a pile for a while. Pretty good spec,...

Re: Gigabyte GA-F2A75M-D3H Budget FM2 Motherboard
Another motherboard with neutered HDMI. I can't find a HDMI version spec for this board, but 1.3 supports the higher resolution screens of 2560x1600, and has been around for 6 years. It seems like manufacturers are arbitrarily limiting the resolution of their HDMI interfaces, but to what end? I've s...

Re: AMD FX-8150 8-Core Bulldozer Processor
I think its fair to say that we all hoped for something better from the fine folks at AMD. The Bulldozer architecture seems to take the worst parts of Intel's initial P4 offering (longer pipeline, lower IPC, relies on clock speed for performance) and Sun's Niagra (lots of slow integer cores, each re...

Re: NVidia GPU always runs full speed when using multi scree
it fluctuates between the 3, but with Compiz running I almost never see it in mode 0. Pretty much only if I minimize all my windows and let it sit for 30 seconds or so.

Re: Poll - Are you Sandy Bridge early adopters affected?
I'm using 3 of the 4 ICH SATA 2 ports on my Asus P8P67 Pro. So far no problems and I am *VERY* happy with my system. I am giving Asus a couple more days before I ask them what they're going to do about the recall, but there is no way I am going back to my old system. I have to say, the Turbo multipl...

Re: NVidia GPU always runs full speed when using multi scree
Hopefully this doesn't confuse the issue more than it already is, but on my dual head Linux workstation, I certainly do not experience the clocks running at full speed all the time. I'm using Twinview on an Asus EN210, and while it tends to run full speed if you do much of anything, it does clock do...

Agreed, but the 8800gt was set to be gifted to a friend, and the Accelero was part of it. I'm pretty pleased after just unplugging the fan.

Exactly what I needed. Now I can accurately determine my best overclock and monitor current speeds! My current settings were just a stab in the dark, with this tool I can determine my best overclock. Re: Asus P8P67 and P8P67 Pro P67 Motherboards
I picked up the P8P67 Pro yesterday as part of my upgrade to Sandy Bridge. Along with it, I picked up a 2600k cpu, 16G of Corsair XMS3 ddr3-1333, Thermalright MUX-120, and an Asus EN210 video card. As a preface, I'm running Ubuntu on this system. The P8P67 Pro has a lot of features I don't need. I d...

New system, new video card: nvidia 210 (also linux)
Hey all, Just reporting in with a purchase I made yesterday. I dropped a little money on a Sandy Bridge system, which I will post about in the motherboard/cpu section, but part of the upgrade was a new video card. My previous setup used the ECS N8800GT, which came with a factory-installed Accelero S...

I have - and love - this drive
I picked one up pretty quickly once they became available. I've been a Seagate fan for a while, and I really needed an upgrade from my 250G 5400 drive I was using before. I would have a hard time being more pleased with this drive. I have an Antec P150 case and have it rubber band mounted, its well ...
