Wasn't there a lot of stir-up about this on the papers recently; remember flying across an article on the tube - "heating costs on average to increase to £1000 p.a."?

Try putting a ball of cat or dog-hair onto the shelf. Works pretty well with martens in Europe. Alternatively, there are more professional devices available that emit uncomfortable noise outside outside our hearing-spectrum.

I'm completely puzzled as to why the design has been changed from Molex at all. Probably just to make everybody's life a little more complicated.

Looks very nice set-up. Intel makes faster CPU's but considering that you want to build able budget machine 4850e will do its job wonderfully and it will take less power than Intel counter parts. My personal preference would only drive me towards an AMD processor to make use of the 780G IGP. The di...

I'd also like to echo my 'colleagues' here, hard drives are simply louder than good, undervolted fans. YOu're much better off investing your efforts and funds in quiet hard drives than just turning off the fans and hoping nothing melts. I wished I had known that 2 months earlier. Funnily, the WD320...

I'd buy my own confocal microscope and have it built for quiet usage. Our current setup is a pain in the neck, those damn lasers just need too much cooling. Sounds like an airport.

edit: hmm a little off topic, I just realised.

There are plenty of HD3450/3650 cards on the market which don't break into sweat with HD-content, are passively cooled and are definitely cheaper than a 9600GT.

How do you think about the Rebel 12 w/o the side-fan. I think it's called the economy version. 12 5.25" bays on the full front, mesh intake, 140mm fan mounting frames, same exhaust size, bottom mounted PSU, dirt cheap. The quality neither the best (judging from my Rebel 9) nor the worst, but good va...

Hmm, let's see. A somewhat acceptable european diesel car runs at 5litres per 100km, that's roughly 56 miles per gallon. An efficient car 3 litre car, such as the Audi A2, will do 94 miles per gallon. That's of course with moderate driving around 2000rpm.

You burn much more fuel running pure ethanol Not surprising. The energy density is far less than for fossil fuels. Backyard Ethanol production won't be efficient for a very very very long time. I have a HD3870 SCS3. The problem is that the cooler is on both sides of the card and it basically takes up three slots. Clearance to NB heatsink is usually not a problem. I haven't spotted any RAM heatsinks, which is a likely reason why the memory frequency is set lower than in other HD3870 cards. ...

Cistron, did you subtract out the hub area? :) No, my calculation was as easy as 70^2/60^2=1.36 (pi cancels out anyway). I suppose the bigger the fan the better, since the hub can stay at a similarly small size. However, it also means there is less air-pressure as this is related to the rpms (if I ...

If the airflow is proporational to the fan surface area, this would imply a ~35% difference.
