It's debatable whether the inside or outside of a platter is higher performance. Based on hard drive benchmarks, it appears that the outside of the platter has lower performance as the read/write speed tends to dip gradually downward. This is assuming the drive works from the center outward. I'm not...

For years I've used many partitions on all my rigs with the OS alone on the primary so I could image it for backup. Thats pretty pointless really, as you would still need to re-install all of your apps and games as well. Actually, this isn't pointless at all. Although it's true that some applicatio...

Do you have cool n quiet enabled? It makes a huge difference in temperatures. It won't help you for high load temps though. Make sure the heatsink is fastened tightly and if that doesn't work, check to see if the cpu and heatsink have flat surfaces with the razer blade method. I have the same cpu ex...

Try reinstalling windows to see if this fixes the problem. If you installed windows on its own separate partition this shouldn't be too much trouble. If not you can always try creating a new partition and installing windows on there. Run that copy of windows with no changes for a while to see if you...

Sounds like it could be the dreaded svchost.exe process using 100% cpu (or 50% if you have dual core). Microsoft has a hotfix you can download that addresses this. First thing you need to do is to check cpu usage when this happens. Open up task manager when this happens and you should see. It's hard...

large files on FAT32 flash drives
As usb flashdrives get bigger and bigger, our media files also tend to get bigger. The problem now is that flash drives operating under FAT32 cannot store single files greater than 4gb in size. I was wondering if anyone out there is aware of how to get around this without compromising performance an...

I was actually thinking of hooking up all my case fans to my mobo yesterday. I wasn't even aware that this could have blown my mobo. Luckily, the only thing preventing me from doing so was the fact that I had a 5.25 fan controller and wanted to still use it. The fan headders also appear to be delibe...

The simplest and most effective solution I can see is to simply move your graphics card to another pci-e slot and mount a silent fan on your 8800. Note that you may not be able to run the card at 16X pci-e however it's been shown that the difference isn't all that significant. I had thought about t...

It is a good idea that you plan on partitioning your drive. I recommend creating an independent partition for each operating system. One thing you must note is that the operating system partition for Windows at least, will need to be at least 20gb if you do a lot of downloading or file transfering f...

Acoustipack now has a new revision of their product out. As far as I can tell, they have traded the dimpled thick sheet of foam for a thin sheet. They've also reconstructed the thin sheets to include a high density layer in the middle. The foam blocks for your floppy and 5.25 bays also seem to be so...

That is true. As the Anandtech article points out, per wafer there will be a significant difference. That however will have no large effect on the larger scale. Suppose you need to produce 100 chips. Smaller dies might allow you to create it all with 2 wafers, but larger dies may result in 5 wafers....

A picture is worth a thousand words... (From Anandtech ) That just proves that die size has no significant impact. If it did, logically the smaller die would cost significantly less. If you look at nvidia's income statements, you see that their research expenses are more than double the production,...

High density ram is something you need to look out for. A limited number of chipsets can make use of it. Last time I checked, the VIA chipset works with high density. Most motherboards use low density. If you stuck in a high density stick into a low density board, it will only recognize half of it. ...

I don't think the huge die size significantly raises the cost of production. Most of the cost is due to the R&D as well as the premium charged for the latest and greatest. One thing's for sure though, we can expect price drops on every other card. I learned this the painful way when I was forced to ...

Well, if you want to save a lot of money and don't mind a little bit more work, you should go for the cheapest laptop you can find. Re: What is your favorite MP3 encoder?
Why do you know this? Double blind testing shows that almost nobody can tell the difference between lossless and 256kbps and higher VBR. Lossless is good for archival purposes, but not necessary for fine listening. I might be in the "nobody" category, but I can definately tell the difference betwee...

I would personally buy a tower cooler like the TRUE and stick it in the case now. If it really doesn't fit, I'd just leave the side door open for a while until you get the p182. You'll only suffer from a month or two of dust and then you'll be set with the p182 for as long as you own it. I wouldn't ...

If over the ear headphones make your ears hot, try open air headphones. I have a pair of Grado SR80's and they're extremely comfortable and don't even cause my ears to feel damp after hours of use. That's not correct. It would be if your ears knew exactly when the noise is being emitted. It's just simply put, your ear reacts to noise when the sound waves reach it. It doesn't matter if I yell at you from 10cm away or from 10 miles away. Your ear (technically your brain) will only react when the...

I don't see why the connection must discretely be made with iPods. Granted, it's arguably the most popular and successful portable player in production, but does that automatically void all other manufacturers of responsibility? You can't start blaming corporations because of the public's lack of common sense. Infact, iPods come with a maximum volume control setting that you can customize. It doesn't seem reasonable to me that corporations should be held liable unless there is something wrong or illegal with their products....
