Re: Fanless HTPC for 2018?
Thank you, Steve. After some consideration we have decided that it's important to us to have a (proper, modern) browser, which neither a RasPi nor a Roku would be able to offer. We also do not want a separate device just for disc playback, and having to switch input sources on the telly. So in the e...

Fanless HTPC for 2018? (solved)
Thanks again for the great help I received here some years ago, building the machine that is today still going strong (with minor updates, such as an SSD main drive). I'm now trying to build a truly silent HTPC -- not for gaming, so only with enough horsepower to view videos off of a NAS (with some ...

To be perfectly honest, the last time I was on top of my game regarding processors, they had names such as 'SX' and 'DX'. So thank you very much for your input! What I did here was that I simply picked a (more or less random) motherboard with the outputs I wanted, and then found the lowest-TD...

Yeeet another help-me-choose post, for a MythTV HTPC setup
Hi again! It's been a while since I got excellent help with my (then) new pc . It's still almost impossible to hear and a true delight! This time, I'm looking to build an HTPC. My Pioneer HDR is getting a bit old and I've wanted to build a MythTV setup for years. This is me taking the first real ste...

maybe a little fan would be the easiest alternative? Yeah, but I would like to keep things as passive as possible. All fans cause vibration and noise, as well as requiring some amount of cabling. I'm reeeally not that keen on putting a 40mm fan in there, even if it is from Scythe. I just have no id...

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't even aware that they had software-queryable thermal sensors; I just use a hand-held IR thermometer. It's true that it's not a critical issue since I do not intend to overclock. Still, I would like to look into increasing the surface size of the sinks because there is v...

Chipset cooling for GA-EP45-DS3R?
Hi, I'm quite happy with my build based on a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R motherboard in an Antec P182. My temps are okay -- the cpu remains almost cold to the touch under its huge HR-01, and the gfx card idles at 52*C with its passive heat sink ( pic ). With only two Nexus fans, I can hardly hear the thin...

I needed to do a quick google to see what you mean. I have a P182 -- and it is like you want it. See these pics of P180 vs P182 . My guess is, it's just part of the manufacturing process and serves no real function; maybe they already had a 3-bay cage from another case that they extended, and with t...

It seems that my motherboard (GA-EP45-DS3R) only supports PWM (they drop support for standard voltage controlled 3 pin fans!). Say what now, are you sure? I've got the rev.1 board, and as you can see in this pic they do have both kinds. What's your revision? This would mean that I would hav...

I can confirm that it does. I have the same board, and according to p24 of its user guide, the CPU and SYS2 fans are PWM while the SYS1 and PWR (PSU monitor) headers aren't.alcachi wrote:I have to investigate if my Gigabyte EP45-DS3R motherboard supports PWM (a few googling seems to indicate that it has)

Re: Your take on fan filters?
So why not just give your PC a good blow say once in a month? Ain't that bad and takes less than 10 minutes anyway. Um, because most of us can't be bothered to "clean house" all that often? Really, I understand the point you're making. Any regular cleaning habit is fine, filters or not; but if you ...

All right, now that I have new hardware somewhat up-and-running , my situation looks a good deal better. First off, I installed smartmontools . It reported my drives were running at 33*C and the WD drives didn't do excessive head parking. So that's one point chalked up as a success. Then I installed...

Okay so apparently, this is what I should be looking for: http://www.quietpcusa.com/images/rc56.jpg 1) It seems to be out of stock in a lot of places (not this specific item, but the general doodad). 2) Heck, I can solder in a resistor myself, and that's basically all it is. But I can't tell from an...

Well, those bits between the slots have two main functions: they add structural rigidity to the case, and they shield against EM static. Plus a little bit of effect in keeping the dust bunnies out. If you are willing to downgrade these, go right ahead and cut up your case! :) In reality, most of us ...

Does anyone know what Spin_Up_Time stands for? Seems like most if not all of us have a high number in this parameter. FYI: "Spin-Up Time": Average time of spindle spin up (from zero RPM to fully operational [millisecs]). ( source ) In other words, it's perfectly normal to have a value of a couple o...

Fan undervolted (12V->7V); now no rpm readout?
Hi, I have a slight problem that I find is not covered by any of the how-to guides (here or across the net). I have: * motherboard with PWM headers (Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R) * two 12V case exhaust fans (Nexus 120mm Real Silent D12SL-12) (these have both standard Molex plugs and 3-pin fan header plugs)...

Looks great - definitely up to SPCR standards! Thanks! I'm extremely happy about this, too. I've now re-routed the HDD cabling so it's even neater, and there's room for the lower-chamber fan (should I need it). Why did you decide to get a 8400GS over onboard graphics? What temps are you getting on ...

Is the rotation of the HR-01 the optimal position? I would have thought that the air flow was mainly front to back, so that the other position would be better. Well, heat wants to rise, and since the two fans are about equidistant from the heat sink and so provide equal airflow backwards and upward...

KlaymenDK, you've done a great job! Your cable management is far bettter than mine.
