Re: List of fanless laptops
Finally an interesting candidate that may buck the trend of planned obsolescence: Lenovo X1 tablet is an interestingly fresh modular design with the latest generation of Intel Core M processors. Haven't got a chance to peek at its internals, but at the very least it's fanless, and spec'ed up to 16GB...

Re: Looking for a fanless & upgradeable laptop
That's about an impossible quest right now ... currently all the Core M system that I know: a) They all have soldered on-board RAM, max up to 8GB now, better than last year's fanless b) None has the user removable battery in the traditional sense, that you can bring spares. Dell Latitude 7130 had it...

Re: durable laptop on a budget?
No 4K, her use cases are pretty light. The only "heavy" thing that she does is keep far too many tabs open, which meant the 2 GB RAM Atom based machines were out. Her only other requirements were size (13" max) and durability. Her laptops have a rough life even without the toddler, often getting fo...

Re: durable laptop on a budget?
The Asus Zenbook UX305 looks pretty and reviews well. Decent run times, fanless with Core M CPU and well done thermal management. Downside is the integrated battery. That's a major showstopper, I would just not spend more than $500 on something with sealed battery (I have yet to see a teardown of U...

There are SSD upgrades for IDE 2.5" now, for example two Aleratec mSATA adapters on Amazon (9.5mm and 7mm): http://www.amazon.com/Aleratec-mSATA-Speed-Converter-Adapter/dp/B00HZT4CFS/ http://www.amazon.com/Aleratec-mSATA-Speed-Converter-Adapter/dp/B00U6TW37I/ But there are also cheap alternative ada...

Dell Venue 11 Pro 7140 Convertible Tablet with Intel Core M
In my opinion this dell is probably the best convertible fanless Windows tablet out there right now, it deserves its own thread. I have done a review on it here: http://computingearth.blogspot.com/2015/03/review-dell-venue-11-pro-7140.html It can be spec'ed with 8GB (onboard) RAM. I would wish that ...

Re: List of fanless laptops
Talking about planned obsolescence, most Core M laptops/convertibles/tablets released since last year are fanless designs, but I am yet to find one that has user removable battery, not to mention one that has both user removable battery and upgradable SODIMM RAM. This frustrating phenomenon of plann...

Re: List of fanless laptops
Correction: Acer now publishes max supported RAM for E 11 (E3-111) to be 8GB.
Although I doubt many would actually be able to do it given the troublesome access to the SODIMM slot.

Re: List of fanless laptops
Flex 10 has soldered RAM with a max of 4GB configuration. Acer's E 11 is hardly user upgradable and there is no confirmation from anyone that 8GB would work (see my review ). The only fanless I am aware of that reportedly support 8GB RAM are the upcoming Acer B115(P) and HP Pro x2 612 G1. I am yet t...

Re: List of fanless laptops
How's the balance when it's in laptop form? Is it tippy? It appears reasonably stable to me in laptop mode. Admittedly I don't do touch a lot in laptop mode, but the times that I use touch in laptop mode it works fine without tipping over. So I guess having a second battery in keyboard part helps w...

Re: List of fanless laptops
That seems nice because it's actually a tablet with a keyboard dock. That means all the heat-generation happens away from the keyboard? (so that keyboard remains room temp at all times?) Yeah, the keyboard part only contains the ports and one of the two batteries of the system. So most heat is gene...

Just got my hands on a HP Pro x2 410 G1. Overall very impressed. A nice upgrade from my laboring Fujitsu p7120. Kudos to HP for making haswell fanless designs.

Re: How to decrease (set limit on) TDP of Xeon E5-1600/1620
E5-2603 and E5-2609 (80W TDP) might be good choice but I am not sure. They are available at Newegg for $200 and $300. E5-2630L (60W TDP) is a pretty safe bet and I see HP selling it for about $1K. Also Zalman recently released a bracket ZM-OC2011 which might work with the TNN (although not officiall...

Intel DN2800MT Marshalltown (probably the closest to the low power requirement)
Jetway NF81-T56N Brazos
I would only pick from these 2 boards as I think starting 2012 msata is a must-have feature for Mini-ITX.

Re: Dell M6500 4x8GB Configuration Available
4 SODIMM slots is not becoming the norm for notebooks. Nor will it, because: 1. the need for memory is not rising faster than Moore's law 2. notebooks are not getting bigger Those are just your opinion. Maybe you were living in a cave recently so I took the effort to collect some facts for you: Sep...

Dell M6500 4x8GB Configuration Available
Apparently Dell started to sell 8GB modules on the M6500 notebook since July. The max configuration is 4x8GB = 32GB. Although when I checked today on Dell website that cost > $9k (over $2k per 8GB module) for the memory alone. This is likely the SODIMM DDR3 type. It's not clear whether this part is ...

If you read about Ncomputing, this probably can be done already. The VM part is sort of like your 'head end', but it does need to do some transcoding work. I don't mind having good SSD's either, both SSD and RAM help with virtualization. However since people like to bring this question up over and o...
