Re: mobo stolen from porch.
Weird thing is that there was a cell phone number on the shipping label, but I don't think we ever got a call. You would think the first thing to try when you receive a package and don't know where it goes would be to try the phone number of the addressee...

Re: mobo stolen from porch.
Update: Just had someone ring the doorbell and leave the case at the door. The box looks sealed and unopened. I didn't see who dropped it off. Looking at the address label, the unit # was printed first (two units with the same street address), and I'm wondering if it was delivered to the correspondi...

Re: mobo stolen from porch.
Happened to me (well, my brother) earlier this week. Silverstone case reported delivered by UPS ~ 12:20pm, brother came home at ~2:30pm, checked the front door, to find it gone. Some other stuff delivered in the past few week had been fine, including other holiday gifts and more expensive items. I g...

Re: Apple should put optical drives in all Macs
I really don't want to pay Apple $80 for an external drive. I wonder if there is a way to file share or use the old target mode to use the ODD on my MacBook as a source for the Mini? Yes, you can share an optical drive from windows or mac (linux, too, if you're clever enough, I imagine): http://sup...

But jitter on the S/PDIF out from a typical sound card or motherboard is terrible. Asynch USB should be nearly jitter free. I'm using opitcal S/PDIF and never noticed anything. I always thought jitter would be caused by the source, such as a CD player, but shouldn't be an issue with ALAC/FLAC files...

Re: Windows 8: what do you think about it?
Windows 8 is an attempt to keep pace. In my opinion, it succeeds only partly. It's neither fish nor fowl. The design is daring, some of its elements are admirable, but it is half-baked. Aren't most of Microsoft's consumer products half-baked? I find it curious that MS seems to hire a lot of smart p...

Cool -- did not know that there were fans with built-in controllers that slotted into PCI brackets. (being able to switch between PWM and VR with the knob controlling voltage/fixed speed is also very cool)

Those fan controllers look nice -- can I ask what brand they are?
Nice audio setup, too -- not surprising that spcr members care about music playback, I guess.

Is this necessary if you already have a 120GB SSD? Unless there are lots of music/video/photos to store, I think it'd be easier to manage with just a single drive.Jens Lyn IV wrote: [*]HDD: Western Digital Blue 2.5" 1 TB WD10JPVT (size TBD)

IIRC, the video signal over HDMI and DVI are the same. I use a single HDMI to DVI cable to route signal from my A/V receiver to my monitor.

I've been looking at a Sony NEX-5N, but waiting to see what the F5 looks like, and what new lenses are in the pipelines.

Thanks for the suggestion. What kind of input do those take? For all my 3.5mm ports, I don't seem to have one for simple stereo output. Do these have a USB option? The green port is the default for a single stereo out. You can try plugging in headphones to see if it will work. The motherboard drive...

Re: Can't get CPU fan below 1000 rpm on Asus P7H61-M LE
I would test if speedfan is the problem: if you're in the BIOS and have the CPU fan profile set to manual, you can adjust the fan settings down to 20% (or lower, if your temps are low enough). If it's fine, I'd just uninstall speedfan since it doesn't seem to be reading CPU temps correctly. If not, ...

You don't mention your monitor resolution. In any case, I think the 6670 is underpowered for Diablo 3. Here's a couple of benchmarks. Techspot Tom's Hardware Good call. Also depends on what the OP meant by "higher settings". Seems like it'd be ok at 1680x1050 on highest settings with AA, while you ...

I wonder if it wouldn't be better to invest in a GPU with a better cooler installed, rather than spend $55 on an aftermarket one. EDIT: I assume the Gelid case fan is fine, but you might be able to save a couple bucks with a scythe slipstream pwm fan. (dunno if there any benchmarks comparing the two)

MGE is new to Photoshop CS6, and uses both the OpenGL and OpenCL frameworks. It does not use the proprietary CUDA framework from nVidia.

I think how much of a boost you'd get with photoshop CS 6 by going to a GPU would depend on what filters you commonly use. ...and CS6 will work but I think it could perform better with a better GPU. While Adobe has added Open CL features to CS6, I haven't seen how much gpu is really needed to make f...

Re: First Build: a couple of quick Qs...
You may want to look into aftermarket CPU and GPU coolers depending on their respective noise levels. The Noctua should be fine. Though the specs for the Temjin say a height of up to 165mm will fit, which works for most of the tower coolers. I suspect the GPU will likely be the worst culprit in ter...

I think most coolers fit inside the Antec Solo II without any difficulty. So you should probably dig around for some comparisons of noise levels among the various heatsink choices. Personally, I'd go with a Mugen 3, but only because I have experience with the Mugen 2, and with the fan being controll...

More modern screens handle this problem much better than older screens, but the point is still 100% valid, native resolution on an LCD looks much better than a non-native resolution. Fair enough. @Andy, you don't necessarily have to run games at full-res if you go 27". If you run at a lower-resolution and let the monitor figure out how to upscale the image, it's like free anti-aliasing! ;) Though I agree that if you want to be able to watch movies with buddies, the TV option is much better. ...
