Re: Quiet, 2 drive NAS?
I'd recommend a Buffalo LinkStation Duo. I bought one on sale 2 years ago for under $250 and it came with 2x500GB hitachi drives. The only thing you can hear is the fan sometimes, but it's pretty quiet overall. If I replace the fan I'd probably wouldn't hear anything from it at all. You can attach a...

Quiet P180 build
I'm new to the forum so I thought I'd share my current system. Excuse the lack of pictures, I built it back in '07 and only snapped a quick pick of the inside while I was cleaning it last night. Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 (2.66GHz) Abit IP35 Pro motherboard Crucial Ballistix 4x1GB DDR2 800 Samsung sata2...

Re: question about power consumption and related article
Thanks for the thoughts. I read some benchmarks on the various processors. Oddly, the 2400s(2.5ghz) outperforms the 2500s(2.7ghz). While the i7 still shows a considerable gain over the others, I think the i5-2405S will be a good choice. Newegg has it for around $215. Far as memory goes, using two 4G...

Re: question about power consumption and related article
Budget doesn't necessarily mean cheapest. When I say budget, it's not so much do I have that much money but more like do I want to spend that much. I don't like spending money, but I don't want to build a system that's overpowered by a cell phone either. There's about a $100 difference with the i7 o...

question about power consumption and related article
I'm looking to build a mini-itx system and for the most part have selected all the components already. Since I plan on using a picoPSU, 150w is about as high I can possibly go. I read this article from the site: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article959-page8.html My first impression would have been,...

Re: Subtle and quiet PC case?
Haven't used the P183, but I do currently use the P180 along with a Seasonic 430w PSU. In my opinion, it makes no more noise turned on than it does sitting there turned off.

Re: new DIY NAS project, lots of questions!
I also like WD, and quite frankly they're the only HDD brand I trust. If it makes any difference to ya, I once had to RMA a drive with WD(10yrs ago) and it went a lot smoother than it did with Seagate(who decided not to give me a new drive). As far as using the green drives in a RAID, don't bother. ...
