Re: Phanteks T30-120, a new King is rising
Given that these fans are 5mm thicker than most 120mm fans, how easy are they to mount on heatsinks (whose clips would generally be designed for 25mm-thick fans)?

Re: best silent hard drives in 2020?
It continues to baffle me why the bare drives cost $100+ more than the external storage versions. Usually is warranty. Also, it means you don't have to deal with the near-ubiquitous 3.3V pin issue unshucked WD external drives apparently have. Plus, you have greater certainty on exactly what drive m...

It depends on what I'm using them for. Currently, the only one I have installed is used for storing TV season packs, which I generally only write to very occasionally, and read off a full season occasionally onto a 'temp' drive (so that I can delete the temporary copies as I go, to keep track of whe...

Has anybody had any experience with these drives? I've been hearing mixed signals. Most sources suggest that they're very quiet, a few disagree. Alternately, is there anything in the same size (12TB+) and price (<3c/GB) class that would be quieter? I've currently got Seagate 8TB Archive (SMR) drives...

Re: High Pressure 80mm fans
Couldn't find a fan. But maybe you could stack two of those Noctua fans? It doubles the pressure(4.74 mmH2O) and you should get something like 21 dB(A). I saw a lengthy thread on that idea over on overclock.net, and the consensus was that, unless you could find counter-rotating fans, or place an ai...

I saw this reviewed on Tom's Hardware. They put a watercooler in it, but given that it features "large ventilation holes on all six sides", it occurred to me that it might be suitable for a completely fanless build.

There's also Fractal's Define C and Define Mini C, if you want something a bit bigger than the Nano S, but still smaller than the R5/R6.

If no further SPCR reviews are forthcoming, would it be worthwhile turning this site into a curated portal/directory for quality external silent-PC-related hardware reviews and commentary (assuming that such doesn't already exist)? We are doing this, in this forum. On video cards, in particular. Ye...

Kotetsu vs Kotetsu Mark II fan clip compatibility
I'm looking at putting together a new build in the next month or so. For the CPU cooler, I am looking at the heatsink from either the Kotetsu , or its successor the Mark II (which are virtually identical except for their fans), in combination with either Noctua's NF-A12x25 PWM or Phantek's announced...

Re: Define C: 120mm vs 140mm intake
Thinking about it further, given that the bottom fan of a 3x120mm stack is more obstructed than the upper two, wouldn't that mean that it would produce more turbulence and thus noise at a given rpm than the others, and that to minimise noise for a given airflow, you should run it at a lower rpm than...

Re: New noctua 120mm PWM fan, NF-A12x25 the GT Clone
Noctua has released a LGA3647 version of the updated U12S featuring this fan in push-pull ($99.90 from Amazon).
In other news, US sellers seem to have sold out of the PWM version of this fan at MSRP (a third party on Amazon is selling it, for the desperate, at $89.99).

Re: Define C: 120mm vs 140mm intake
It's not that bad. A standard ATX PSU is 14 cm long. The drive cage use ~10 cm and a front fan 2.5 cm. Totally 26.5 cm. That leave about 10 cm to split between cable compartment and distance between front fan and drive cage. 1) ATX PSUs of greater than 'standard' length are very common. 14cm is is ...

Re: Define C: 120mm vs 140mm intake
You remove the hatch and move the drive cage to the rearward location. Then the airflow will blow onto the drive cage and be deflected upwards. The exhaust fans help steering the flow from there. 1) Diagram 1 of p8 would appear to indicate that there's not a great deal of room between the drive cag...

Re: Define C: 120mm vs 140mm intake
Olle P: 1) The air resistance from (i) the Drive Cage, (ii) the PSU & (iii) the small size of the vents above the PSU would mean that virtually no air would get from the lower chamber to the upper chamber in order to cool "other stuff", with the hatch in place. 2) In most modern builds, HDDs are (i)...

Re: Define C: 120mm vs 140mm intake
1. It will help cooling any HDDs mounted at the bottom intake. How much heat do a couple of HDDs produce compared with a CPU + GPU? Is allocating nearly one third of your air intake to cooling them effective use of your fans' output? 2. There's a hatch in the top of the shroud that you can remove t...

Re: noktua nh-d15s vs nh-u14s
Just watch out for the newer plastic washers for LGA1151 (don't use them, otherwise the CPU contact will lessen and will result in higher temperatures). I presume you are talking about the washers that go under the 'stud nut' spacers on the original Kotetsu, not the plastic spacers on the Kotetsu M...

Re: New noctua 120mm PWM fan, NF-A12x25 the GT Clone
It looks like the NF-A12x25 may be getting some competition: Phanteks showed off its yet to be named upcoming lineup of fan prototypes with an enhanced "multi-faceted" blade design. These blades, made of fiberglass, work to minimize the bulk of the noise caused by the whiplash. Inspired by vortex-da...

English-language video coverage of the Noctua booth. Sounds like there will be a fair wait for the new NH-U12 (though U14-equivalent performance is pretty good and the predicted $100 pricetag isn't quite as bad as expected -- though given that the U14S+2nd fan is around $85, perhaps not that great)...

Re: Define C: 120mm vs 140mm intake
Q: Why are you comparing 2 fans to 3? Because we are doing whole system testing. 2–140/3–120 is becoming a common fan layout in cases, so it makes sense to compare how other people would setup their cases to maximize airflow. I'm trying to decrypt what these results will mean for the Define Mini C....

If I were looking for an alternative to the Noctua cooler number one on my list would be the Scythe Mugen 5. In part because the newer Scythes have an excellent mounting system, arguably as good as Thermalright. A lot depends on prices in your particular location. In the UK the Mugen 5 and Thermalr...

Re: New noctua 120mm PWM fan, NF-A12x25 the GT Clone
A potential issue with the A12x25 is the corner design. It is maybe best described as semi-closed which might cause issues with coolers that use clips that fix to the back of the fan. However since the True Spirit 120 Direct uses a front mounting I don't see any problems. Yes, that was one of the r...

Re: New noctua 120mm PWM fan, NF-A12x25 the GT Clone
But there seems to be no significant difference between the two at 800 rpm or less. The review states "The noise value when the power is off is 33 to 35 dB" which would seem to indicate that below 800rpm the testing setup is unable to distinguish sound levels versus background noise. I'd be very in...

Re: New noctua 120mm PWM fan, NF-A12x25 the GT Clone
I seem to remember reading somewhere that a Noctua rep stated that a 140mm version would require reworking the design more or less from scratch. So it seems unlikely that a 140mm version is imminent.

It looks like a 140 in the topmost position would be all but unobstructed, but a second one under it would at very least have that 2nd horizontal "bar" plus the corners encroaching on its aperture a little bit. Nitpicking to be sure, but if using the filter (which I plan to) ever square millimeter ...

3 x 120 or 2 x 140 on the front intake....opinions?
