Re: Silent PC build - first time
Hello, folks - For any who might stumble across this thread in a similar circumstance, I thought I'd post a follow-up. A week or two ago, I built my first computer - a silent PC - along the lines of what was being discussed in this thread. It's been a learning experience. The hardware I finally went...

Re: Question about coil whine
I did a recent build with a Seasonic 520W Platinum, and to my great disappointment, it's got the problem. The funny thing is that it didn't begin until about 2-3 days in. My set-up is an open air mobo with NoFan CR95C and the power supply on the tabletop next to it. At first when the whine began, it...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
...and the CR-95C has to clear it too: Said that, I don't fully get you: you are no afraid to build a case really from scratch, but the mere possibility to send back an incompatible part (if you should ever do that) scares you that much? :o Anyway, have a good luck and enjoy your upcoming build. :w...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
The ATX I/O shield has a standardized height, any board have to clear it (moreover the GB wi-fi module is higher than the I/O ports). I see. But the shield height (even if standardized) won't have a bearing on whether the cooler clears the jacks. Shield height, I would think, is always at least sli...

Use this image: https://www.asus.com/media/global/products/EVO6Ez8gzRTT9I8A/zkf2ddrzulBMXvs8_setting_fff_1_90_end_500.png You know the motherboard dimensiosn to be 170mm x 170mm so take a ruler to your screen and calculate the height of the ports on the back from the PCB. I will not do this for you...

This image would also suggest it would *probably* clear it:

Here's a photo with a different mobo but similar I/O suggesting it would clear it - but just barely:

Re: Silent PC build - first time
The info I have on the CR-95C is that it allows 40mm RAM clearance. This isn't the lowest of all CPU coolers but as stated before by others, stick to non-fancy sticks of RAM. Anything with skyhigh heatspreaders will not work. The DDR4 standard is 31.25mm PCB which is just fine. The diameter of the ...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
Just plan ahead if you are using the NoFan95, 1) get standard height memory, higher will not fit. 2) crosscheck the back of the motherboard dont have any chips that might not allow the backpltate to sit even. 3) in my case, it was superhard to get anything connected after the heatsink was on, speci...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
It depends on the case but the NoFan will work with the motherboard itself. Whether or not it will work with the case, that's another question. If you take a high res picture of the motherboard and scale off the dimensions then you should be able to calculate the clearence for the cooler. Why are y...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
After looking at a lot of mobos, I find myself leaning toward the Asus Z170i Pro Gaming mITX. It seems like most of the other H170s and Z170s I've looked at suffer from a variety of problems, whether WI-FI issues, Windows 7/10 compatibility issues, audio issues, and so on. Also, I'd like to get some...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
I wonder if an i5-6600 would run into problems at heavy load. I don't understand your remark: the board power circuitry is unable to support a CPU which it should support by default, without any issue, and seemingly you just think "Who cares?"... Why would you want to buy an underrated board? I hav...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
I don't call it a favourable review: set aside some questionable temp/power figures under load, a) actually SPCR gave the award to the other board; b) about yout board, paraphrasing SPCR conclusion: "...Our i7-6700K processor at stock speeds buckled under the pressure when taxed with... a combinati...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
I guess the point isn't taken :) Yeah, if you run Prime95 on both, one will max out in the vicinity of 35W and the other in the vague range of 65W. Now ask, what could you possibly be doing app-wise to run these CPUs as hard as Prime95? ..and if you aren't, then they will follow in close lockstep i...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
Don't go with the i5-6600T CPU. No benefit over the i5-6600. Both parts will have the SAME power use at similar application loads..which in your case, is pretty low to begin with. And, if you decide to game, you get the benefit of the i5-6600's higher clock rates. mobo: - Assuming you go fanless an...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
✓ Intel Core i5-6600T It's rather pointless to lean towards a T-SKU: I'm pretty confident that an undervolted, uncrippled CPU would serve you better. ✓ Gigabyte GA-Z170N-WIFI Sorry for being that "tranchant", but it's more pointless than a T-SKU: it's hot and rather inefficient when hot, pick an AS...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
But that was the reason for my question re: GPU fans. If someone had a crap case or made a few big mistakes with configuration and the inside of the case was hot, my question was whether that could in itself trigger the fan on a gfx card. In which case, an otherwise silent and fanless PC might have...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
The bitter answer is "unlikely": to heath a modern GPU over 60-65°C you need it deliver some computing power, you can't heat it just by thermal diffusion. Said that, you know, it never rains, but it pours. Thanks for that answer. At the moment, I am leaning toward the following: ✓ Nofan CR-95C CPU ...

that's assuming I'm smart enough to get a decent case with adequate ventilation. Do not mistake "fanless" with "no cooling". Naturally. But that was the reason for my question re: GPU fans. Re: Silent PC build - first time
@CA_Steve: Thanks for that info. Here's a question though: would a Gfx card fan ever kick in on account of being in a warm case? Maybe the real question is: Will your non-gaming apps ever significatly heat up the case? :) Podcasting: No. Low cpu/gpu utilization, so near idle power use. Somewhere in...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
As I said above, my primary goal is a silent PC. But if I can get a graphics card that'll allow me to play some games (the newer the better) naturally then I'm for it. Certainly, I can hold off on getting a GPU and may do that. On a different point: I sort of like the look of this DIY MakerBeam case...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
Lots of helpful info here - thanks. I took the components list, more or less, from QuietPC.com, and figured if they're doing builds with it, the parts are compatible. But it sounds like there are better options. Since an M.2 isn't a big jump performance-wise, I'll take another look at SSD. Regarding...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
Thanks for the informative reply. When you say fan profiles, do you mean in BIOS? Also - I was surprised to read that M.2s are slower in booting than comparable SSDs. Re: games. I've been unable to play any for so long that I'm not even sure what's out there anymore. But I'm sure that my current mac...

Silent PC build - first time
Hello, folks. Had a quick question or two. I want to build a silent (fanless) PC. I've upgraded RAM and swapped out HDs before - easy stuff - but this'll be my first-time build from the ground up. Let me tell you what I'm interested in, and get your thoughts. Case: Fractal Define R5 or maybe the S. ...
