Hmm. My vote goes to a 232 MB Maxtor RLL drive, which I bought in the early 90s. I forget the model but it had eight platters and used up two 5" drive bays. It had a pleasant low-growling sound that made the computer sound very powerful. I could feel the seek vibration in the soles of my feet from a...

I don't know if you can treat a fan as a simple resistive load but, assuming you can and that I didn't make any mistakes, a quick calculation based on the power ratings of each fan at 12V gives the following: Fan Resistance (ohm) Voltage(V) Current (mA) Power(mW) NMB 100 6.95 70 483 Papst 115 6.00 5...

Re: Small mod, at least 4 c reduction!
I have 2 front 80mm fans, I moved one of them (top one) up so that it is at the same height of the rear 120 mm exhaust fan, it also blow fresh air at the cpu heat sink as I mount the fan inside a 3.5" cage and enclosed the cage to use the cage as a duct. I have similar experience with my Sonata. I ...

Fridge cooling idea seems strange, but keep in mind, all new inventions or innovations all look strange in their first appearances, the history has proved that. It's actually not a very new idea, though. Here's a couple examples from overclockers.com, with pictures: http://www.overclockers.com/tips...

I have to admit his exuberant approach to silencing has a certain coolness factor to it. I'm just a little bit jealous. :D Back on topic, I'd be worried about condensation fr...

In fact: if you look at pictures from the review here, on this page , you can see the sensor I'm referring to. Fourth photo down the page, screwed to the heatsink just behind the green capacitor. Hmm, could be a case of mis-identification for me, then. I didn't realize there is a thermistor under t...

nutball -- Your thermistor was screwed to the heat sink? Mine's not. It's nestled between the transformer coil, a large capacitor, and two mosfets, but touching none of these. The PSU is as loud as wumpus's, so I would guess reversing the fan is what made the difference for you. EDIT: Having reverse...

RaynorWolfcastle -- I happen have an Abit IS7-E. I'm running at 270 FSB 5:4 mem divider and my machine is pretty quiet. Sounds like the CPU voltage regulator on the motherboard is faulty or suffering from heat problems. As Ralf pointed out, a 0.2V drop in vcore is not normal even under maximum load. Intel specs say that a drop of 0.1V is typical (with good mobos you see maybe 0.05V) and that the minimum acceptable vo...

I see the SPDs as well but I've got the following at device address 0x44. Byte #3 changes when I change the vcore in BIOS. Based on the few safe voltages I can use, the register seems to correspond to the 6-bit input signal accepted by the Intersil chip, assuming a constant 0.375V offset to the outp...

Hasw -- Yeah, I've been eyeballing the mobo, all right. Vcore on Abit IS7 is regulated using Intercil's ISL6556B. I've got the datasheet but the problem is the chip doesn't have an i2c interface. Presumably there's an additional chip that implements it but so far I've been unable to locate it on the...

The problem with tiny NB fans are that you go crazy with them real soon and want to rip them out. The easiest time to take them out and replace with a passive cooler is before installing the motherboard. That usually means you want to void the warranty of your motherboard before even mounting it in...

Hasw -- a couple of questions for you... Do you still make the source code available? I found an old version on freshmeat but nothing since.
