Re: Haswell Low Power Builds
I imagine he is using a PicoPSU. That saves him the 10-13W that a big sized PSU is wasting as heat at such load loads. 30W at idle at the power socket is normal for Haswell builds without discrete GPUs as long as no "gaming" or "OC" micro-ATX / mini-ITX motherboards are used, and that includes the ...

Whilst this is true on the most part, the Seagate Backup Plus (STDR200020x) drives include the 2TB Samsung M9T with a small USB3 to SATA board attached. I run 4x 2TB M9T in a Synology DS411Slim, all shucked from Seagate external drives bought from Amazon UK over the course of a few months. are you ...

Re: List of fanless laptops
Did Intel put restrictions on netbooks with BayTrail?
All the ones I've seen have screens with paltry 1368*768 resolution...
If I'd find a fanless 13" model with high resolution screen I'd likely buy it in a heartbeat...

Re: Spinpoint M9T 2tb 2.5" 9.5mm
newegg doesn't sell this drive bare but seagate sells it as an external drive which can be removed and then used. I wouldn't be so sure. Most portable HDD's now have a circuit-board that outputs directly to USB rather than SATA. Whilst this is true on the most part, the Seagate Backup Plus (STDR200...

Re: AMD Kabini: Athlon 5350 Desktop SoC
It would have been nice to see power and performance comparison with Intel CPUs in the same price range, i.e. an Intel Celeron and a Pentium model from the Haswell generation. 5150/asrock am1h-itx dc in, ssd... idles at 16 watts. (the 5350 should idle at the same amount, but i only have the 5150.) ...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards
I don't understand why these boards (except for the Supermicro ones) don't come with build-in DC-DC circuitry. The target market for me appears to be the low-cost/low-performance market (between the Core-arch Celerons and boards powered by an ARM SoC). Having to add a mini ITX case with PSU or exte...

Re: I need a prebuilt system around 10watts
I will use it as a server. If you keep it on 24h/24 after some time it hangs due to memory errors. So, if I can choose, I will choose ECC. Would it be possible to have a cron job that reboots periodically to clear out the RAM? Might be a cheap solution? ECC is only supported with server boards, rig...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards
I don't understand why these boards (except for the Supermicro ones) don't come with build-in DC-DC circuitry...... These bay trail solutions are very interesting, but all the extra costs easily add up to having a 200-240 euro solution when compared to a 80 euro Raspberry Pi, or up to around 150 eu...

Re: Mediasonic ProBox 4 Bay 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure
Having myself an external eSATA enclosure with port multiplier (Lian-Li EX-50), I am wondering what the impact is of a single drive's failure on the other drives in the enclosure which uses a port multiplier. There's an article that says this may impact operation of the other drives (while the faile...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards
Actually with 88% efficiency, the Corsair doesn't do too bad at 10% load , but at 50W load it'll probably have quite a bit lower efficiency, probably somewhere between 82 and 88%. Nevertheless, the Corsair is extremely expensive (for a PSU), and I'm sure there are much, MUCH cheaper and more efficie...

Re: micro-ATX cases - SFF ( <10L)
The Sea Sonic SS-300TGW is semi fanless up ~100 the fan will stay off and it's 80+ gold certified. The Chenbro 719 should be tall enough for the Big Shuriken so it's fan can double as the single system fan. That sounds reasonable. However, an external AC-DC brick still has my preference, as it woul...

Re: micro-ATX cases - SFF ( <10L)
First of all, maybe I should clarify that I currently own a mini-tower with plenty of empty drive bays that I could use, but I wish to find something way more compact. There's no set budget, but cheaper = better, unless convincing reasons exist to go with a more expensive option. Chenbro PC719 + Sea...

micro-ATX cases - SFF ( <10L)
I'm looking for a tiny and minimalistic server case which can hold a µATX motherboard. Unfortunately mini-ITX is not an option because of a lack of finding server-grade motherboard which hold 4 DIMM slots on mini-ITX (except for Intel Avoton, which even at 8-core has too low performance for me). PSU...

Re: Haswell Low Power Builds
FrankL, what are the power figures as a torrent box? do you have c6/c7 power states activated? I'm not going to test this, but an educated guess would be that the consumption would be in the 20-25W range with HDMI, WLAN and GB-Lan active and some torrents transferring in the lower single-digit Mega...

Re: Akasa Euler Fanless case
As for those holes: they are too small! you will need to drill them out a tiny bit (a fraction of a millimetre) in order to fit a pair of RP-SMA pigtails as they're called. Of course this will void your warranty (although, what kind of warranty can possibly be useful for a case without PSU?). Since...

Re: Asus Q87T temperature issues with Akasa Euler case
You haven't really formulated any question that I can answer in your post, but from the cpu and hdd temperature it is very clear that you do not have any temperature issue (as indicated in the thread title). What you do have is a problem with either program(s) reporting the motherboard temperature, ...

Re: Akasa Euler Fanless case
Got my case today. The thing is very heavy. You really wouldn't want to drop it on your foot by accident. The MB I used was an ECS H87H3-TI. Everything fit with the MB face plate, but it was wicked tight. I feel pretty certain that the CPU sits flat because I applied the paste, put the MB in place,...

Rereading your post, I am wondering if you somehow end up with a gray market rip off. That description sounds pretty bad and much worse than we have heard from anyone else. I just assembled a DQ77KB + Akasa Euler system over the weekend (in large part thanks to Mike's review and this forum topic), and I have very mixed feelings about the Euler. Re: fanless build - concerned about component lifetime
Admittedly that's with a CPU with a 55W TDP (I'm targeting CPU a 35W TDP) Don't take comfort from that! TDP ratings aren't to be used like that. I don't think the actual heat outpit of those CPUs would be all that different. Hopefully the T part packs a more efficient GPU and operates at lower volt...

Re: fanless build - concerned about component lifetime
The machine will be in an environment where the maximum room temp will likely be in the 25-32C range. I think the PC should be build to last 8 to 10 years in this particular case. about the advice to get a more expensive CPU: I've seen people saying you can achieve a similar power envelope with soft...
