What would be useful to diagnose a problem like this is a "Task Manager"-like tool that indicates which thread/process is causing the hard disk activity. This could be used to also diagnose which thread/process is preventing a HD from spinning down.

Anybody know of such a tool?

What is the best material for ducting? cardboard is cheap and easy to mod but it is ugly to put it in a system. any other material is good for ducting yet do not require a lot of workshop equipment and efforts?
