Avoid the pre-8500DV AIW Radeon's as they have problems with the sound & video sync when ripping long MPEG-2's. I am looking to buy also, but waiting to see if they come out with an AIW 9600 Pro. I have the Radeon AIW 8500DV and yes it did have lots of problems. After much headache and trial + erro...

Once you have narrowed that down, If it is the CPU fans (Panaflo's), then you can replace them easy. If it is the PSU or 120mm top of case fan, it is a little harder, but still achievable. Actually, the 120mm top of case fan is very easy to replace. Should I replace it with a Papst, undervolt it, o...

How about SmartDrive 2002?

Some old Maxtors are very loud. DM+9 is quiet when placed on foam, but they do seem to run a bit hot.

Also worth considering Hitachi/IBM 180GXP if you are concerned about performace too.

Wow, something's not right about those temps - I've got the 7000Cu, keep it on the lowest speed setting, and it has to be an incredibly hot day to even approach those temps; on a 2.66/533, i'm easily 20 degrees lower than what you're seeing. 60 - 20 = 40oC You are getting better results than Mike's...

If it's stable, I would not be overly concerned with your temps. I got SLK900u on P4-1.8A OC to 2.0 and temps are about 42oC/54oC idle/max with a Panaflo L1a @ ~7v. I have very little airflow through my system with 1 exhaust panaflo L1a@5v and panaflo L1a@7v in the PSU. No front intake fans at all. ...

You don't need a 3 to 2-pin convertor, the third wire on your fan is for rpm sensing. In your PSU there is a 2-pin header; if the 3-pin fan cannot be connected because there is a plastic header in the way, just get a flat screwdriver and remove the cap first. Otherwise just plug in the fan with the ...

Go for the 12v Panaflo 'M1a'.

It is very quiet at 5v and shifts approximately the same cfm as the Panaflo 'L1a' @7v. It is also about the same noise.

With the 24v Panaflos they are not widely used/tested and could be noisier.

Just look for a Panaflo 92mm ending in 'L1a' or look for low volume/flow.

I wouldnt use the drive cage at all, this adds to vibrational noises as I mentioned before. With 3 drives the vibrations will make quite a bit of noise.

I would just use the setup I illustrated, completely remove the drive cage out and sit the HD at the bottom of your case. And no don't turn them..

It's fairly cheap to send fans (light in weight) to Canada, and I am pretty sure many of us have spare ones lying around doing nothing. This way the recommended list can become much bigger?

I agree with Kostik as I have also tried mounting the whole cage on foam and found it to increase vibrational noise. Snorlax you solution sounds like a good compromise. Yes you put it on the heatsink and yes its the 80mm fans I refer too. I think you got slightly confused, the Zalman fanmate is a simple voltage regulator 5-11v. You turn the tiny knob to vary the voltage feed to your fan.

I would advise you to change some of your Panaflo's L1a @7v, to M1a @5v. The medium flow Panaflo's pushes about the same amount of air at 5v as the Panaflo Low flow at 7v. The noise is about the same too.

So this way it should be a lot safer on your PSU.
