I'm not totally sure what is limiting a SSD, but here I'm guessing it's the actual reading/writing to the memory chips. The big difference between the two is that the SSD is not limited in the way the HDD is: theoretically it can read and write data on mulitple places at the same time. Interleaving...

How would someone who spent $1K on a power cord, feel after they realize it connects to hundreds of feet of plain old home depot mains wiring in their wall? They SHOULD feel like a jackass. Temperature extremes DO have an effect on sound though. During the coldest winter days of the year, there was ...

I think this is exactly what you're looking for: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127082 I bought one a few days ago, works like a charm. It's fast, runs pretty cool and max power consumption seems to be 10w. Also, it's one of the few switches that support jumbo frames. I was...

Get an rsync backup routine going first, then worry about RAID, or just do both at once. I have a server downstairs that has RAID1, and my workstation has two momentus drives in a RAID1. The biggest reason for RAID1 is system drives. Backing up files and documents is easy and they can be easily reco...

I never understood why some of you guys want to build silent servers. They're SERVERS for pete's sake! A sane set of priorities for a server (especially one a business depends on) would be the following: 1. Data reliability (lost data==huge problems) 2. Component reliability (busted parts == downtim...

Vista is indeed a pig. The requirements it lists are JUST to run the OS, not to do anything useful with it. The OS needs to get out of the way and let you do what you want to do, and that's what Linux does. Windows users will never know what a fast computer really feels like (unless they run the pre...

djkest I think that risk for shock is a bit exaggerated: - I was measuring around with a mulitimeter and couldn't find a tiny volt anywhere. - If I don't remember wrong, the main capacitor was marked 500 uF, and that can't store much current. - There is a light-emitting diode, always shining on my ...

At 0.13A, I don't see any problem with running two of these right off the motherboard. However, these fans have built in PWM amps. They watch the mobo connector to see how fast to spin and instead pull their current directly from the PSU, allowing you to piggy back as many as you want off the mobo (...

Very unlikely to be effective. The clicking is very slow (about 4 times a second), and the PWM fundamental frequency is very high (often 20-100 KHz). A capacitor could indeed smooth out the main PWM pulses, but would have almost no effect on the periodic full-voltage long pulses used to make the RP...

There's a minimum voltage that keeps the fan turning over very slowly, and that will keep the CPU temperature at around 28C over room temperature. Right now, it's 22C in my room and the CPU is idling at 50C. If the fan voltage drops any lower, it will stop. The voltage begins to gently ramp up aroun...

Flash drives have limited WRITE cycles and unlimited READ cycles. If you're using Linux, that means going with ext2 and possibly no swap. If you've got a server nearby you can stick in your basement, 4GB locally is no problem. Because of the risk of killing the flash after a while, I'd suggest going...

I'm assuming you mean RAID0 which I'd advise against for any size drive. Reason: Either drive dies, you lose all your stuff. I'm running a RAID1 pair of Seagate Momentus 5400RPM/160GB and it is quieter than any Seagate, Maxtor or WD 3.5" I've ever had. The 2.5" give you more flexibility in mounting,...

Mounting a fan with a donut-shaped air flow pattern onto a square heatsink is stupid. Doing it twice is really stupid. If you want to get maximum cooling from minimum air velocity, you need to use ducting. Either set up a positive pressure case with a ducted exhaust or put the fan at the exhaust and...

I'm not sure how quiet that setup will be. It seems geared towards gaming more than towards quiet operation, which is fine as long as your expectations are realistic.
