Re: Building your own fan controller.
Oh wow, that is a great idea. Don't know why I didn't think about using a micro controller to generate the PWM fan speeds. I have a couple of spare ProMicros sitting around here that should probably work for something like that. Maybe someday I'll have some time to look into that. Nice work!

Re: Silent micro-switches for Logitech and other mice.
From what I found, there aren't many mice that do have these Kailh switches. And the ones I did try I didn't find to be very good mice unfortunately. Hence why I resorted to replacing switches in my existing mice. My modified G305 is still doing well. The buttons are just a little too easy to press ...

Re: Silent micro-switches for Logitech and other mice.
So I was feeling the need for a new mouse again and after doing some searching, noticed that the Logitech G (for Gaming!) mice seem to use the same sized switches for the middle wheel button as these Kailh silent switches. So, I picked up a G305 to try it out. First of all, the default buttons reall...

Re: Buying a UPS battery backup
This is anecdotal but I haven't had good luck with the cheaper APC units like the Back-UPS Pro 1500VA. We had a couple of these around the offices to keep some important PCs running in case of power outages. We had more issues with the UPS than with the power. I feel like one of them would randomly ...

Re: Silent micro-switches for Logitech and other mice.
Thanks for reviving this and providing some info for some more options. I haven't looked at new mice in a while and it's nice to see there are some more options now. Unfortunately, nothing yet seems to be what I want. I tried a bunch of silent mice a while back. In the end, I modded my Logitech M510...

Re: Any update on recent silent cases and their quality?
I'm still rocking my Antec mini P180. Although it is showing its age, as are the rest of my PC components. I still like to see see what's new just in case something comes up. Recently, I heard about Corsair's 110Q which looks interesting. But like with others, the intake looks pretty restrictive. Ot...

Re: CHERRY STREAM
You can buy keyboards with Cherry Silent and also some with Gateron Silent switches. Or something like the GMMK which comes with switches but is hot swapable so you can put any MX style switch in it. But the one in that video was also lubed. Lubing requires access to the switches so either hot swapa...

Re: CHERRY STREAM
Yeah, I've heard that the Logitech keyboards don't have the best keycaps. And the Romer-G switches use their own special mounting that not many others use so there's not really any options for new/better keycaps to replace them. There are better quiet mechanical keyboards than Logitech/Romer-G. Of c...

Which one are you looking at specifically? I see a lot that look similar including some with "Stream" in the title. But none of them match the model number from the product page they link to in the YouTube video. That being JK-8500EU . And of course, the product pages on NewEgg aren't clear a lot of...

Re: CHERRY STREAM
Well, they don't really give any information about what they did to make them "extra silent". So at this point I put it in as just a marketing statement like some of their other crap on their product page. I'd want to see these claims verified. And although a good scissor switch keyboard isn't bad, ...

Re: do nvme ssd drives need heatsink ?
On bare NVMe SSDs, it's usually just the controller that gets hot. If you don't want to buy a complete NVMe heatsink/heatspreader, you could just get a RAM chip heat sink with sticky thermal adhesive to put on the controller. sounds like a good idea, but isn't heat pipe even better? Heat pipe is wa...

Re: do nvme ssd drives need heatsink ?
I've installed a couple of NVMe SSDs on some systems. I have run into temperature issues with them. At the very least, without some airflow, they can get over 70C. On one, we started seeing data corruption when it was running at 75C. I didn't install any heat sinks on them but added some additional ...

Re: Current state of fan control with Intel platform!
My system is relatively old these days running a Core i5-3570k on an ASUS P8H77-M Pro. FanXpert has been working fine for the CPU/case fans. I can't say if SpeedFan was able to control the fans or not. But, I can say that SpeedFan had been working just fine on Win10 as I was still using it to contro...

Re: Recommend me a UPS
I have a CyberPower at home that's been working fine for years now. We use APC at our office. I've been very happy with the more expensive APC ones we have here. Some might be as old as 15 years and still kicking. Just battery replacements from time to time. But I've had issues with the cheaper ones...

Just wanted to post that I finally did this myself. Now my Logitech M510 (the old version, not the new Logi one) is nice and quiet. At least on the left/right click. Too bad the middle button uses a different kind of switch. Need to find a quiet version of the smaller switch next. Thanks.

Re: Recommend a Silent Mouse and Keyboard?
I picked up the Logitech M330 not too long ago. Overall, I like the sound of the buttons. But unfortunately that's about where it stops. First, this being the "larger" one over the M220, it's still quite small. It appears to be taller than the M220 but the length is still quite short. Coming from an...

I've been pretty busy so it's been hard to look into this. I just tried getting some closer pictures of some of the chips and I didn't really get anything that's readable. Re: New 92mm-fan Tower Coolers from Noctua
Nice, the NH-D9DX i4 3U has the same 110mm height as the NH-D9L. The D9DX states it's made specifically to work in 3U cases. (hence the name) Which means the D9L should work as well for socket 115x servers. I built a 3U server a while back that we use for our backup system. I picked up the shortest ...

Re: Are PicoPSU-like supplies the best option at low loads?
Interesting article, but it doesn't jive with my experience with picoPSUs. It could be that this is just a bad/cheap product. I have a couple of different picoPSUs in both the 12V and wide input variations. I did some testing in systems between around 20-40W and the picoPSUs gave the best results co...

I feel your pain with the Matrox graphics. I have a couple of Supermicro servers that I built which also use onboard matrox graphics. Which version of the 836? Some have 80+ Platinum PSUs. But yes, you will be limited to using Super Micro power supplies only. As for you more general question, if you want to get the most efficiency possible, you have to match the PSU to your power requirements. Which is difficult unless you can tes...

For movie watching, I never thought the whole 1080p vs. 720p really mattered much. Yes, there is a loss of detail at 720p, but when you're watching a moving picture from across the room, can you really tell? Or better yet, would you notice if you weren't thinking about it? Just for fun, I just rippe...

Re: 305 Watts enough for this system?
We have a couple of the Optiplex 755s here at work. I measured the power of one of ours here with a C2D E6750, 4x1GB, and a Radeon X1300 to be about 62WAC idle and 103WAC under heavy CPU usage. The 7750 runs off the PCIe slot directly (no external power needed) so the max is 75W. The 150W estimate p...

Yeah, I just noticed this on Newegg over the weekend plus a couple of TFX and 1U models. Again, all 80plus gold. Definitely nice to have some relatively cheap, reasonably powered, gold rated PSUs. No reason to hack up any proprietary Dell PSUs anymore.

Nice, I put together a very similar setup recently. I made a couple different choices. For the CPU I went with the i5-3570K. I've always eye'd the T/S ones. But the only real power savings is under load. And since I was putting a Scythe Mugen II on it, cooling it was not going to be a problem. Idle ...
