Re: Gigabyte H55N-USB3: The De Facto LGA1156 Mini-ITX Board?

For me, the only problem with the Zotac board is... that it's a Zotac board. I can't support a company that churns out new hardware iterations at the drop of a hat (wow, sounds like Apple :)), or leaves a faulty BIOS on their website that bricks boards even in DOS mode. I have the A-E version of th...

Re: P182 beat up to all hell... Now what?

Unfortunately I'm selling my P182 case as it's just too heavy for me to move easily anymore ! As a replacement I've chosen a Lian Li PC-A05NB (light but tall) as well as getting rid of the old heavy components : Corsair PSU GrowUp Japan drive box Samsung 1TB drive So I'll be going from an ATX with 4...

Re: antec isk-100: mini-itx, 90w, 2x2.5", 248x212x108mm

The downside of these v small cases is that they inevitably end up closer to the user due to the need to access the controls/dvd unit. e.g. on the desk next to/behind the VDU. So any noise at all is apparent. I've managed to get a very quiet ITX system in a LianLi Q07 case that sits on top of anothe...

What next beyond Zotac ION B ?

I've managed to shrink my everyday PC down to a Small Black Box (SBB) with one moving part (slow speed fan) that sits on top (!) of my other powerful PC (in a P182) - that is usually off. However to do that I had to use a Zotac ION, which was all very good at the time (last year), but now is irritat...

I have Zotac ION-B in everyday use as a internet/office PC with no problems - mind you I only have a boot SSD in it. Quite right. This is exactly the problem with this case - made worse if there is a CD unit to be housed AND the PSU doesn't have modular cabling ! Some folks on the forum have drilled extra holes etc to make room, but that tends to defeat the purpose of having two chambers. Fortunately the Silversto...

All else being equal (like air flow around the PSU) then the bottom of the case would have slightly cooler air. The top is more likely to have the heat from the PSU go out of the case, and not into the rest of the case. What is your opinion, does it matter if the PSU is fanless or not, to put it in...

You also might want to check out the Western Digital Mybook World Edition 1TB. I see on the Sonos music system forums that several users have bought this NAS as a source of streamed music. It's referenced as having no fan, but that doesn't mean it's silent ! See : http://forums.sonos.com/showthread....

I have tried to quieten various NASs from the ReadyNAS range and there are problems as well as opportunities. I had a PSU fail on an NV caused by replacing the noisy Adda fan with a quieter Noctua - so I reversed the changes I had made to the other 2 units ! The units ran some 8C hotter with the Noc...

Who's got a big Ask then ?

Here's one that always annoys me - as heard on TV many times :

"That's a big ask".

Someone commenting on a large rear view ?
Nope, it's instead of saying " That's a lot to ask of someone " or "That's difficult "

When did "ask" become a noun ?

thanks for your reply... I've been using a 3480 for a few years. Here's my experience : 1. PSU. I recommend that you get the 1200rpm versions and run them at a lower rpm. There is more control with the higher rpm versions (in fact the 2000rpm versions is more controllable but noisier). Running the 1200rpm version at 600rpm is easier (guaranteed to start etc) then running the 800rpm version at ...

Well it all went together very well, provided you remember to install the mobo upside down so that the panel can be put on without the I/O shield falling out. Not a lot of finger room to insert the power switch/reset etc leads. Excellent place to mount the 2.5in SSD, but not that great for any 3.5in...

This is a very good case for a using a passive PSU. The top grill to the case allows hot air to escape. Putting a fan based PSU in this case means that the fan has to vent upwards - AND - that's where the fan noise goes also. I had a Corsair PSU in this case (a very quiet PSU) but I replaced it with...
